Warriors in the Pros: Bess, Colt, LaBoy, Lelie

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano had some good things to say about Davone Bess as he discussed how things are clearing up at the wide receiver position after the second preseason game.
"We wanted to put (Davone) Bess out there in that group and again, aside from the couple of penalties that Bess might have had there, when you take those plays out, and you need to do that, you need to be able to look at young player like that, taking the mental error out because that is going to happen on occasion. You need to be able to look at the rest of his plays out there. I thought the rest of his plays and the rest of his work in that game was pretty good. That's starting to clear up a little bit for me."
Colt Brennan updated his blog yesterday, and had some great quotes:
Coach Zorn and I have a great rapport. On the first play of the last drive, I hit that long pass to Billy McMullen on the sideline. That's usually not the primary route on that play, it's just that's the way the defense played us, they let McMullen go free.

It's funny, I remember running to the sideline saying, 'I'm really sorry, but he was wide open.' Coach was laughing, saying, 'No, good job, good job.'

And then [the Jets] blitzed me and I was able to throw the hot read to Jason Goode for the touchdown.

I think Coach Zorn was just excited that I was out there playing and having fun in a real intense situation. I think he was excited to see me out there having some success.

Coach has told me not to let my head get too big, of course. I appreciate him for that.
Ferd Lewis offers translations of Redskins coach Jim Zorn's seemingly harsh words about Colt.
What Zorn says: "From my standpoint, I think he's doing OK."

What Zorn means: "If I said what I really think I'd have the other QBs either pouting or calling their agents, and who needs that in the preseason?"

When Zorn says: "He's having fun, but there's a lot more distance that he has to go. He shouldn't be strutting his stuff."

What Zorn means: "There are some quarterbacks on this team that shouldn't waste any time in getting their retirement portfolios in order."

The Arizona Cardinals have a profile of "predator" linebacker Travis LaBoy.
Davis said the main reason LaBoy works at predator is because of his pass rushing skills, which are the top requirement for what the Cards look for at the spot.
Beyond that, the Cardinals like LaBoy’s intensity, which actually got him in a bit of trouble last week when, frustrated during practice, LaBoy clipped quarterback Brian St. Pierre with a hit. That’s forbidden in practice, and LaBoy heard from Whisenhunt and a couple of teammates.

Whisenhunt said he hoped the burst of emotion would spill out against the Chiefs, and LaBoy did so, leading the Cards with seven tackles and four tackles for loss in addition to his sacks.
And it sounds like Ashley Lelie aggravated his calf injury somewhere along the line. Doesn't sound too good.
Question: How bad could Lelie be hurt? What are the chances he's gone on the first rounds of cuts?

Instant 49ers: He's not faking it. It's a real injury -- a torn calf muscle - from trying to return to practice too soon. With the emergence of Josh Morgan, Lelie's place on the team is certainly in jeopardy.
