Skills Camp, Bess, UCA, Colt, Corey, Tsai-kos

UH receiver Dylan Linkner reports for KITV from the Hawaii Football Skills Camp. He interviews Leonard Peters and Rich Miano.

Jason Kaneshiro has a report from the camp, and talks to Davone Bess, who was there to help out.
"Whatever you do, give 100 percent effort, on and off the field," former UH slotback Davone Bess said in summing up his address to the campers to close yesterday's session. "Without grades, there's no college, there's no football, there's none of that. That was the No. 1 thing I was stressing to them."
Speaking of Bess, there's a great Rob & Russ Show interview with him up on the AM 1500 front page (check the archives if it get's bumped).

Dave Reardon writes that it's looking more and more like UH will play I-AA Central Arkansas in 2009, and SMU is no longer an option.
“We’ve been in communication with Central Arkansas and am trying to solidify something,” UH athletic director Jim Donovan said this evening. “I’ve conferred with Coach McMackin and he said he’s fine with an FCS team.”

Donovan said SMU and the June Jones reunion is out of the picture, at least for 2009. “That’s correct, they notified us letting us know they’re interested in future years, but 2009 is not possible.

From a few days ago, Anthony Brown of Hog Heaven analyzes what the signing of Colt Brennan might mean to Redskins starting QB Jason Campbell.
Zorn wants Campbell to “play smaller” and is changing his motion and stance so that he plays about an inch shorter than his 6-5 frame. Brennan, by the way is 6-3.

The West Coast Offense requires Campbell to release faster and to be accurate in passes under 10 yards. Campbell earned a 76 QB rating on passes under 10 yards in 2007. His rating for passes of 11-20 yards and of 21 to 30 yards was 85.3 and 88.7 respectively.

Brennan excels at the short game according to scouting reports.

See the pattern? Hear the footsteps?

From last year (and another great find by Fuzzy Logic), a prophetic feature on Corey Nielsen, from the Varsity Times.
Cerritos Gahr’s no-huddle, shotgun-formation is being run with aplomb by junior quarterback Corey Nielsen, who spent part of a two-week summer vacation in Hawaii in 2006 throwing the ball around with Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan.

Nielsen’s uncle, Jon Nielsen, is the quarterbacks and receivers coach for Gahr and a former NFL, CFL, Arena League and XFL player who knows Hawaii Coach June Jones… . The Gladiators’ offense, which includes an abundance of screens and shovel passes, is patterned after pass-happy Hawaii’s.

“The whole scheme is challenging because you’ve to throw the ball around all over the place – show that you’re not going to focus on any one guy,” Nielsen said. “But we all know what we’re doing. We expect to score every time we have the ball.”
Nice. And that last quote sounds familiar.

And in support of the unions representing Advertiser workers, Stephen Tsai will not be posting anything new on the Warrior Beat blog until Sunday. In the meantime, LizKauai has set up a temporary blog for Tsai-kos to chat at.

    Aloha Kakahiaka Tombo,

What can I say about the UH camp and Coach Mac other than to gush some more that we are taking it to the next level. Planting the seeds to reap the fruit later.

As for CB, he is in a good place. He will shine in a few years.

The schemes, and quotes of Corey's HS videos and articles bring a smile to my hardened face. He is a good fit.

I hope the Tsaikos do go through withdrawals, but its still July. It would be devastating lets say in October.

I guess no one knows if KFVE will reshow last years UH football before the season starts.

Defense, at times almost a silent partner to the much-celebrated offense, will have to assume a bigger role this year, especially early, while the offense finds its way. The good news is the defense returns significant talent from a unit that was one of the school’s best in the last 15 years. While McMackin will attempt to fine-tune a big-play defense that returns its heart in the front seven, it is the retooled offense that will bear watching and tell the tale for the defending WAC champions.

    Linebackers

If this is the heart of the defense, it beats with intensity and experience. All-WAC performers Solomon Elimimian, in the middle and Adam Leonard on the outside were one-two on the team in tackles and have combined for 449 tackles and a handful of big plays the past two seasons. Leonard is quick enough to have returned two of the four passes he intercepted for touchdowns. Together, Elimimian and Leonard set the tone for the team’s deepest, most experienced unit. It will be considerably solidified if hard-hitting Blaze Soares and Brashton Satele can stay healthy. Soares has shown a capability for game-changing plays, when healthy. Satele, who signed on with fanfare, could finally have his breakthrough season if he’s not slowed by injuries again.

    Specialists

All-WAC kicker Dan Kelly’s heroics earned him the nickname “Iceman.” This year, the Warriors need him to get off to a faster start and improve his consistency.

I know this is from blogs so the stories could be suspect.

    Dolphins list: Danger zone revisited
    > Posted by Omar Kelly at 10:16:48 AM

So here are the Danger zone members, and for the fun of it I put them in order of significance.

    6. WR Davone Bess - Bess proved he was a playmaker in Hawaii's pass-happy offense, catching 293 passes in three seasons. But that means nothing on this level. He'll have to start making plays on offense and special teams to hold off the rest of the many undrafted rookies.

    Depth chart breakdown: Dolphins offense
    > Posted by Omar Kelly at 10:58:15 AM

    FULLBACK - Spots: 1

Even money: Boomer Grigsby, Reagan Mauia

Breakdown: There likely won't be much use for a fullback in this offense because it'll likely feature a lot of two tight ends, and three receiver sets. The fullback will primarily be used for short yardage situations. That means whoever finds a home on the 53-man roster needs to be a special teams demon, which makes Grigsby the front-runner unless Mauia turns into a bulldozer during the exhibition season.

    RECEIVER - Spots: 5

Sure shots: Ernest Wilford, Ted Ginn Jr.

Even money: Derek Hagan, David Kircus

Uphill battle: Greg Camarillo, Davone Bess, Selwyn Lymon, Justin Wynn, Jayson Foster, John Dunlap

It's likely that two unproven receivers will have a spot reserved for them on the practice squad. That's what Bess, Lymon, Wynn, Foster and Dunlap are likely battling for unless someone starts tearing it up in the exhibition season. One (Bess or Foster) could earn a spot on the 53-man roster if he's an elite kickoff and punt returner.

    CENTER - Spots: 2

    Sure shot: Samson Satele

Ugly times at the HA. The people at that rag need to oust the management crew and get some adult leadership back in place.

ST is way too talented and connected for those people. Too bad they are so blind in one ear and dumb in the other!
