Skills Camp, Stutz, Bud, Tuioti, Colt (w/UPDATE - Corey Nielsen)

UPDATE: Stephen Tsai updated his Warrior Beat post with news that QB Corey Nielsen will become a Warrior.
Corey Nielsen, who led California High School quarterbacks in passing last season, today accepted a scholarship offer from UH.

Nielsen, of Gahr High School, threw for 4,363 yards and 35 touchcdowns last season.

UH is hoping to sign two quarterbacks for the 2009 recruiting class.
Congrats to Corey, who coincidentally is quoted in Tsai's article about the skills camp below.

UPDATE 2: Here's Corey's 2007 highlight video.

Actually, that's just part 1 of 4. Here's Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4.

And here's a profile of Nielsen from last year. Thanks to Fuzzylogic for finding it.

======

Stephen Tsai has a report from the first day of the UH football skills camp.
This camp — for quarterbacks, running backs, receivers, linebackers and defensive backs — runs through Friday. There were about 350 participants, including many of the state's top prospects, for yesterday's two-hour session.

Some players came from the Mainland, such as quarterback Corey Nielsen, a lifelong Warrior fan.

"I love Hawai'i," Nielsen said. "I can't get enough of it. My mom went to Punahou, so I've got some local ties. To be here, it feels like home already."
Billy Ray Stutzmann was in attendance yesterday, and he talks to Jason Kaneshiro about committing to UH.
Stutzmann, who is participating in the UH Football Skills Camp this week, said not having to worry about what's next will help him savor his senior year at Saint Louis.

"It feels great to get that load off my shoulders. I feel a lot more comfortable now," he said.

"(It wasn't) a tough decision, UH had everything I wanted. The coaches, they're getting new facilities here soon, the offense, the atmosphere."
Stephen Tsai has some photos from the camp.

======

Next time you've had too much to drink and puke all over the inside of your friend's car after he was so nice to give you a ride back home, and you feel so guilty and alone lying in your own vomit as he curses you out, just know that it's all for a good cause.
From July 16 to Nov. 30, sales from Anheuser-Busch will help fund improvements to UH athletic facilities.

Anheuser-Busch Sales of Hawai'i will donate 25 cents from every case of Budweiser, Bud Light, and Bud Select products sold across the state, in an amount up to $100,000.

"We truly appreciate Anheuser-Busch Sales of Hawai'i generating funds for UH athletics facilities improvements," said UH athletic director Jim Donovan.

"They are already a top-level member of our corporate partner program and now they are stepping up to support this worthwhile cause as well. This is just another clear indication of the dedication and loyalty they have for UH athletics."
Of course, please don't do that to your friends. Make sure to puke outside the car. Or drink responsibly.

======

Here's a press release from the UH Athletics Department announcing the hiring of Tony Tuioti.
"Tony is the perfect person for this position," McMackin said. "He's coached in Hawai`i, California, and Las Vegas and has a lot of ties with Samoa and Hawai`i. He was on that 1999 team and he and (former UH linebacker) Jeff Ulbrich were the leaders of the defense. I have so much respect and admiration for him like I do the rest of my staff. He's a class act. Recruiting is the lifeblood of what we do here and his leadership and direction will help us in that area."
Jason Kaneshiro talks to Tuioti about his new job.
By accepting the administrative position, Tuioti knows he'll have to get used to being around the game without coaching players on the field.

"That was one of (McMackin's) biggest concerns, because he knows as a coach it's kind of hard to not be so hands-on now," Tuioti said. "I understand what my role is in this program. I've always been a team player, and just to have the opportunity to work with Coach Mack and work with all the other coaches is a blessing.

"I'm just excited to be back. I'd come back to do anything, even if it's to water the grass."
======

And finally, Colt Brennan talks to Ferd Lewis about having no regrets staying for his senior season at UH.
But once the rookie that Redskin veterans have come to nickname "McGarrett" got a look at the check and had an opportunity to compare pay days, rides and portfolios with other players, you wondered if there would be second thoughts?

After all in the NFL, unlike many other pro leagues, the signing bonus is one of the few things that is guaranteed. For all the gloss of a reported $1.8 million, four-year contract and prospects of a first-year salary of $295,000 and escalation to $555,00 on the fourth year, only the signing bonus is assured. Everything else depends on performance, perception and health. The employment agency can be a ligament — or free agent signing— away.

But the beyond-remarkable season of 2007 was worth whatever the tradeoff, Brennan said. "What (that season) meant to me, the team and for the state was something. We got to do something tremendous. We were one game away from living the (unbeaten season) fantasy. The team, the love and respect of the fans, meant more to me."

    Just a question--does anyone know if last year's UH football games will be shown before the start of this years football season on KFVE like it was done last year?

    The following are just miscellaneous reading not worthy of being posted:

    Speaking of poor leadership, where was McClain when the Athletics Department was surreptitiously accruing a $5 million deficit? According to legislators, information about the department's finances was difficult to pry from the lips of former athletic director Herman Frazier. Now that Frazier has been fired and the deficit has been discovered, will oversight and accountability for the Athletics Department's budget be strengthened? No word from McClain's office, as of yet.

    Treat state e-mail the same as other public documents

    Gov. Linda Lingle allowed e-mails of Bob Awana when he was her chief of staff to be purged, as were the e-mails of Herman Frazier after his dismissal as the University of Hawaii athletics director. In this age, e-mail should not be treated differently from other written material in public offices.

    After the Star-Bulletin filed a similar request regarding state payments for travel to this year's Sugar Bowl, UH complied, releasing hundreds of pages of e-mails and documents. However, university attorneys said Frazier's e-mails no longer exist.

    Doesn't seem like the writer knows much about UH. Don't like this predictions--Hawaii #9 in the WAC? Not one Hawaii player even considered for "All--Conference Team? A very good Stadium? We have very nice training facilities? Huge amounts of jerk chicken?

    #9 Hawaii [3-8] I know what you are thinking, this is too low. But let me state my case here. First, I like Hawaii, and think if the right coach is there, they will become a force in the future, because I always thought June Jones missed the boat of Samoan players that he could have gotten. Mostly defensive players at that. As of right now, Hawaii returns 10 starters total. They lost the top FOUR WRs and their record breaking QB. Their defense is a mess too, as if it wasn't already bad enough last year. I can rant for hours about the Hawaii program and what a shame it is that they did not hire someone like Jon Tenuta or Mike Fanoga to be their new coach. They have one of the most rabid fanbases, a very good stadium, and don't believe the media about the lack of facilities, they have very nice training facilities. Also, its freaking Hawaii! If Pete Carroll can use the beaches of California to recruit, then why couldn't June say, "Hey look, paradise, beautiful island women, huge amounts of jerk chicken" I know of about 100 kids from California alone that would be there in a second! Funaki is about the only name you need to know this year for Hawaii. He is a very athletic QB, and should end up winning the starting QB spot. Tenuta or Fanoga would have the recruits lining up from the Pacific Islands, instead, they are going to BYU, USC, UCLA, Oregon, etc..

    To end on Hawaii, the company that I work for does market Under Armour and Hawaii has signed a deal with Under Armour, maybe just maybe, they will at least try to start freeing up more money to the football program in the future, and last, they're football players. Shiny weight rooms with mirrors and chrome handled dumbbells shouldn't be important. Back at ETSU, we trained in the bottom of the Mini-Dome, it was musty, smelled of sweat and a big huge concert set of speakers blared music. I know how most of those boys from Hawaii are, they would love that atmosphere more than a shiny training area.

    HEART AND SOLES
    By MIKEY HIRANO CULROSS

    It would be safe to say that Corey Walter Masaru Nielsen has got his feet on the ground, and that he does it with style.

    Nielsen is on the right page in many ways. In each of his four complete semesters at Gahr, he’s perfect: straight A’s in all subjects. While it’s a bit early for serious college committments, he has an early eye on the University of Hawaii, in his mother Cheryl’s hometown of Honolulu. Mom has made it plain that she’d prefer to have him on this side of the Pacific.

    “I know my mom doesn’t want to hear that, but I have some cousins who go there and I have family out there, so that seems like home right now,” he said.

    Congrats to both Billy and Corey. Good update Tombo Ahi.

    Fuzzy, u crack me up. The Sportingnews prediction with a side of "jerk chicken" is lolo. I didn't know Polynesia included Jamaica which is in the wrong ocean - Atlantic Ocean. I hope Mack, UH and the D are stewing with this prediction.

    Fuiik's (sp?) prediction is yet to come. His might be closer to the truth. Fuiik did predict that UH would go 12-0 last year.

    CB is da man. Please help with my bucket list. Ha, ha, ha.

    Just happened to be doing a google search for my username on Sporting News, 3peatTrojans, and stumbled across this. I would first like to say that most of my family, including grandfather, was born in Hawaii, he later moved to Samoa. My comment about "jerk chicken" was a bit of sarcasm about how easy it should be to recruit players to Hawaii. I do not agree with the way the University runs the program, by not having a head coach that understands young players from the Pacific Islands.

    Which is where the "jerk chicken" part came in. As if the coaches the school hires tries to sell his beliefs of Pacific Islanders on the young players, even if it means not even knowing something as simple as the cuisine. It also was a shot at U of Hawaii for not recruiting Pacific Islanders that grow up in America.

    I understand that humor these days, in the written word, can slip by some, but I had no idea that someone was quoting a complimentary post of the people of Hawaii that support a school, that doesn't even support your heritage. Maybe no one will read this, but I did want to explain that.
