Training Camp Day 15 Wrap-Ups (UPDATE: Rally Cancelled)
Greg McMackin talks about having the linebackers and secondary go full speed against the receivers in yesterday's practice.
Jason Kaneshiro and Billy Hull write about the return of Laeli and Fonoti, the competition between Robinson and Mana Silva, the success of the Wahine football clinic, and the clearance of receiver Jovonte Taylor.
And don't forget that tonight is Murphy's Pigskin Pigout. Here's a KGMB interview with Don Murphy, who talks about the event and some of the items that'll be up for auction. Be there!
"We wanted to make sure we can tackle in the open field and we can catch the ball in the open field. We had some really good hits and some really good catches. The good thing is we didn't have a lot of missed tackles and there were very few dropped balls. So we got out of it what we wanted."Billy Hull profiles senior cornerback Calvin Roberts.
"Really there's three corners that are really standing out, and he's part of that three," said Miano, referring to starters Ryan Mouton (left) and Jameel Dowling (right)."In the past we didn't have that kind of depth and quality. Calvin's a starter, it's just we can only start two of them."Leila Wai profiles JC transfer cornerback Jeramy Bryant.
Although it can take a transfer up to a year to adjust to a new defense, Bryant takes guidance from those who made a similar transition.Continuing on the defensive back theme, Stephen Tsai profiles Erik Robinson, who's competing for a starting spot at strong safety.
"It's taking me kind of a long time, but people like Calvin (Roberts), (Ryan) Mouton, Jameel (Dowling), everybody helping me out, it should take me half the time, if that, because they know exactly what it's like to be in my shoes and exactly what I need to learn," Bryant said.
"We know he can hit," McMackin said. "He came into games (last season) and did a great job for us. He has game experience."Tsai also notes that John Fonoti and Fale Laeli were back to practice yesterday after sitting out with injuries.
Robinson said he has recovered from surgery to repair ligament damage in his right shoulder.
"I've been working hard," Robinson said. "When I mess up, coach Miano is correcting me. I try to get better every day. I'm here to compete."
Jason Kaneshiro and Billy Hull write about the return of Laeli and Fonoti, the competition between Robinson and Mana Silva, the success of the Wahine football clinic, and the clearance of receiver Jovonte Taylor.
Taylor was cleared to join practice yesterday after being limited to a spectator role while UH awaited his official transcript from Los Angeles Southwest College. He took part in yesterday afternoon's practice devoted to special teams and is expected to contribute as a receiver and kick returner.UPDATE: The kickoff rally at Tamarind Park that had been scheduled for tomorrow has been cancelled.
"I've been studying my plays, meeting with the coaches and I'm catching on," Taylor said. "Sitting out for two weeks was tough, it was irritating, but it all worked out. I'm ready to go now."
And don't forget that tonight is Murphy's Pigskin Pigout. Here's a KGMB interview with Don Murphy, who talks about the event and some of the items that'll be up for auction. Be there!

I haven't heard any updates on tyler lately, any word on his suspension update or him coming back to the team.

Tide has turned on defense at Hawaii
The program known for its offense will emphasize defense this season.

Still, the Warriors were picked by the coaches and media to finish fourth in the WAC a year after they swept the league schedule and earned a berth in the Sugar Bowl.
Some of the doubts center around the massive changes in offensive personnel.
Others are a result of the offseason upheaval that saw the school lose its popular coach to SMU, fire its athletic director as a result and watch two star wide receivers turn pro early only to go undrafted.

WAC Football Preview: Front-line players, not skill players, lead Hawaii
By Dan Hinxman • dhinxman@rgj.com • August 21, 2008
One year after playing football's version of pinball to near perfection -- a loss to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl ended the team's hopes for a 13-0 record -- that's exactly the position the Warriors find themselves in. They return a number of linemen on both sides of the ball and a stout group of linebackers, but as far as experienced ball handlers, Hawaii has bubkes.
(Note: bubkes is a Yiddish word--http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yinglish Bubkes (also spelled "bupkis") — emphatically nothing, as in He isn't worth bubkes (literally "goat droppings", in Polish "bobki"))

I like Bowstock's Report on John Fonoti's return, describing John's first pass rush. Pretty funny stuff!
