Wednesday News Vids

Chawan Cut is too sick and tired to compile, but the news stations are being great putting their news vids online the night of the broadcast.

KHNL has news about Carl Clapp assuming the interim AD role, as well as speculation about the new head football coach, with Greg McMackin receiving a lot of support.

KGMB reports that McMackin has turned in paperwork for the position and has the support of June Jones. They also report on Ryan Grice-Mullins entering the draft.

KITV has a report on Carl Clapp, who discusses what UH is looking for in the next UH head coach.

KHON has a story on Clapp and the search for a football coach as well.

And finally, Irse has posted tonight's episode of Leahey & Leahey in Windows Media format. A lively discussion between Jim and Kanoa Leahey about the departure of June Jones -- the timing, the possible reasons, the shock of it all. And then they have a great interview with coach Jeff Reinebold, who among other things says that Greg McMackin would be a great choice for head coach. Awesome show. The video quality is a little funky, but the audio is fine. Thanks to Irse.

While I like Mac a lot, I am very concerned about using a coaching staff model w/ a defensive coach as the head coach. Can anyone name just a handful of successful pro/college teams where the head coach had exclusively defensive coaching experience? You win football games by scoring lots of points. That's why Hawaii has been so successful. If our lead coaching position is defense oriented that will be a 100% change in philosophy. I don't know if that will work.

I am concerned that the admin is going w/ Mac because everyone likes him, he is an excellent defensive coach, it is easy, and he will probably be way less than what they offered JJ. But I tend to think it will be a mistake in the long run.

If we want a high powered offense, we need Norm Chow or Kevin Gilbre.

The ideal combo would be Chow on offense and Mac on defense. We would be unstoppable. But our admin is too short sighted and cheap to do what is necessary to hire both of these men.

i understand what you're saying, but right now i can't see chow or gilbride being interested, though we may get a surprise next week. i think retaining the coaches here -- mcmackin, cal and ron lee, etc. is the best thing for this team. like miano said in today's paper, you clean house when you're 1-12, not when you're 12-1. ron lee knows the run and shoot and could be a great offensive coordinator. cal lee and reinebold are great defensive coaches and recruiters. i'd be extremely happy if they all stayed on under mcmackin. there was a sidebar in one of the papers which showed that mcmackin was successful as a head coach at oregon tech, even if it is an NAIA school. whoever they hire, it gotta be soon.

Actually in regards to the topic of what teams use a defensive coach as the head coach. Off the top of my head.. Pete Caroll at USC handles the defense, the offense is handled by the offensive coordinator. And look what results came of, when Norm Chow was at the at that O.C. position... 3 National Championships..!?!?!?
