John L. Smith for Head Coach!

That's right, John L. Smith, the former Michigan State head coach who's had a "very interesting" history coaching against Hawaii, wants to become Hawaii's new head coach.
Former Michigan State coach John L. Smith, who runs a wide-open offense similar to Jones', is among those being considered for the Hawaii job.

"With 18 years of collegiate head coaching experience and over 130 wins, I would hope that would qualify me as a candidate to be the next head coach at the University of Hawaii," Smith told The Associated Press in a telephone interview from his home in Louisville, Ky.

Smith, who was fired following the 2006 season after compiling a 22-26 record with the Spartans, said he couldn't wait to get back to college football.

"I think I could bring high energy and an unsurpassed work ethic to help keep Hawaii at the top of the WAC," he said. "I've had experience recruiting Hawaii, and also Samoa along with of course, the West Coast and the rest of the country."
Is he doing this to be funny?

This is exactly the type of guy we don't need. I think he is serious. $500,000 to $1 millon in pay is big bucks.

Heck, I would be coach and absolutely horrible at that. I don't mind being ripped on by everyone including my mother for $1 million a year. Heck, I would also be AD and do squat like HF and then get $300,000+ for a buyout of the contract.

Let's be smart about the new AD and coach.

Almost everyone recommended by June Jones will probably be in that range. In fact, unless we hire from within, everyone will expect at least what Jones was getting.

If UH was prepared to up the ante to keep Jones they need to do the same in their search for a new head coach.

Frazier simply being gone does not mean that we've suddenly upgraded our (now nationally known) inadequate facilities nor the money allocated to the program or the staff.

The powers that be, let this become a very public event. The whole state will be watching, which means it becomes very political now too. Anyone who comes will need to win over the fans.

Please tell me this is a joke. Please. Isn't this the same jerk who bad mouth UH after Timmy Chang and the boys whipped their butts? Isn't this the same fool who told all the Big Ten coaches not to fly to Hawaii to play the Warriors because our refs cheat? Please tell me I am wrong. The nightmare is getting worse.

I hope they stick to the JJ coach replacement recommendations and not get off course with it, he deserves that much respect at the very least.

My top choice for the coaching position should be Coach Cal Lee, with Dick Tomey as the AD.

This two powerful men can make a huge impact UH Football.

Cal Lee knows the R&S and I feel he will make a huge impact by just giving him a chance at coaching the Warriors, heck, when he coached St. Louis they were unbeatable for many years. Besides, the players already have a solid relationship with Coach Lee, he can be the second Polynesian HFC in college football thus opening the door for many more.

Dick Tomey will bring the connections Hawai'i needs to remain competitive in the top of the WAC, or even take it a step higher.

Imagine mixing up the run and shoot with Dick Tomey's trick plays on 3rd and long?.....Hmmmm

It doesn't look good with this John Smith as a coach, I think he just wants a job and be able to play golf year round.

JJ trust all these coaches with all his heart to take his place, it would be disrespectful to him by not honoring his suggestions.

I have a feeling McMackin will follow JJ.

UUUGGGGHHHH this Smith guy just reeks of wanting the money. Axe him now!!!!

Tombo, I just sent a long letter to McClain and Hinshaw. If I knew how to post it for you I would. I urged them to throw money at the hiring of the new coach. If they get Chow they can turn this whole disaster around.
