honestly..it's a no brainer: norm chow at head coach. he'll bring out the best of hawai'i's offense and his celebrity status may be enough to keep jones' recruits. AND i say we bring in akina to replace mcmackin. we bring in those two, it'll set a strong foundation for the coming years. but of course, it all comes down to the money

If you want the Warrior's offense to pick up where they left off, hire Kevin Gilbride. Gilbride was the offensive coordinator for the Oilers' in the early 90's i.e. he's a run & shoot disciple.
If Hawaii gets a coach that runs a conventional offense I'm afraid they won't be able to compete. The RnS is a great equalizer of talent that is unless you're playing ... Georgia.

How about Lee Cataluna? She talks big, let her back it up!

I would love to have Norm come back to the islands and coach. But is he willing to take a pay cut and have to deal with the nightmare that is the Hawaii government? June Jones don't grow on trees...
I do appreciate June Jones' exit. Although at first it seemed like a nightmare, at least in his exit he is trying to address the root of the problems (reactionary vs. visionary) and pave the way for his future successors on funding and facility issues.

What about Tomey as AD?

Dick Tomey as AD and Norm Chow as head coach would be my idea of a perfect match for Hawaii.

At first I was leaning toward Norm Chow or Cal Lee both excellent choices. However, I feel Greg McMackin may be the best choice now.
Here's the reasons....Norm Chow has a high pedigree. He coached in the NFL and at USC but with that pedigree will come money. Only money will be able to seal this deal which UH doesn't have. Cal Lee is a local hero but he doesn't have the NFL connections or name recognition that June Jones had which will make it a little difficult for recruiting. Plus he's never been a college football head coach yet. Don't get me wrong...I think Cal would do great but it may take a few years before he gets comfortable dealing with the politics of running a Division IA football program (something he didn't deal with at St. Louis).
The logical choice would be someone with Hawaii and NFL ties. Someone who is associated with this year's undefeated team and familiar with local culture. Someone who cares about Hawaii and the young men on the team. Someone to keep the loyal assistant coaches in Hawaii (Rich Miano, Jeff Reinebold, Dennis McKnight, Cal and Ron Lee). That man is Greg McMackin. I don't know if he would consider this jump to head coach since he's been extremely loyal to June Jones but thought I would throw it out there. It doesn't hurt to ask! If not McMackin, Norm Chow or Cal Lee would be excellent choices.
Hire Dick Tomey as your athletic director and let's keep this momentum rolling. If they hired Dick Tomey (instead of Herman Frazier) the first time as Athletic Director, we would not be in this situation. We would still have June Jones as our head football coach and we would be competing for WAC titles every year.
Keep the unity and momentum we have built in taking the UH football program to new heights. It's time for the whole island to step up and fulfill June Jones' vision of taking us to the next level. From law makers to UH officials to fans, don't drop the ball again. Maintain our athletic facilities, reward our loyal assistant coaches with contracts and raises, and acknowledge the excellence that June Jones brought to this program by filling the stands at the Aloha Stadium next year.
All the money from the BCS bowl should go to athletics department to improve our facilities and give our loyal assistant coaches contracts and raises. Learn from your mistakes and support Hawaii's football team. Look how one special football team brought a whole community together. Believe...Go Warriors!!!

off-topic anonymous, funny you should ask, UH Athletics Department just released this article today.
"Hula Bowl
C.J. Hawthorne, Jacob Patek, Hercules Satele, Michael Lafaele, Jason Rivers
East-West Shrine Game
Jason Rivers
Senior Bowl
Colt Brennan"
Hula Bowl is this Saturday, Shrine game is 19th, Senior Bowl is 26th.
great comments by all. i'm leaning towards mcmackin right now as well. check out the tsai blog for all their comments in support of greg. he would provide continuity, he's a great coach, the kids love him, he has a great rapport with the assistant coaches, etc. i think he'd be great. he's probably joining june though. just hope they take care of this AD situation soon and it doesn't turn into a long drawn-out process like reardon is hinting on his blog, screwing everything up.

If we took Norm Chow he wouldn't be taking much of a pay cut if we were able to pay him as much as we were willing to pay June, because when Norm first took the Titans O.C. position he started with a salary of around $800,000 a year I think. At this point in time he's making about $1 mil. So I know we were offering June somewhere around 1.5 mil, if we offer Norm that pay I'm sure we could get him.

Of course Norm Chow! Honestly, I don't think he wants our problems and we can afford him.
While some fans are salty at JJ leaving, we should appreciate the sacrifice for JJ to stay here, and his offer to HF to stay at a reduced pay in 2006 with certain changes, as reported in the newspaper.
I agree that NFL connections are important and someone who knows HI. Hopefully, we can be like BSU, and keep everything close to the same with a different slant to things and support the boys.
For those reasons, Greg McMackin should be asked next, even though he plans to leave.
After that, I like either Rich Miano or Jeff Reinebold. While I really like the Lee brothers I think its a tough sell to get recruits and convince them that they have ties to give them a shot at the pros. While I also like Dennis McNight I don't think he has the temperment to deal with the UH Administration and their lies.

I love Norm Chow too, but all the reports say he is making $2M. Even JJ said he would cost more.

If UH offered McMackin over $1 million, I think he would stay. Wasn't that the situation where June let McMackin go last time to Texas Tech.?
I hope the administration looks into Greg McMackin as HC. We also need to keep McNight, Lee brothers, Reinbold, and Miano.
I'm glad Steven Tsai mentioned it.

Definetly Norm Chow, who cares if people say he interviews poorly. Just look at the numbers and players he produced at BYU when they were in the top 15 every year, his few years at NC State that turned Phillip Rivers to a top pick in the NFL, then USC with Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart, and then his best job is at Tennessee with Vince Young. His offense is amazing

I really hope they at least try to go after Norm Chow and not just pick Greg McMackin because its easy.
