Herman Gone

As of tomorrow. According to Dave Reardon:
Herman Frazier is out as University of Hawaii athletic director, several well-placed sources told the Star-Bulletin today.

Frazier reported for work today, but was noticeably absent from a news conference this afternoon where UH president David McClain and Manoa chancellor Virginia Hinshaw talked to reporters about football coach June Jones' leaving UH for SMU.

McClain and Hinshaw said at today's news conference there would be an announcement and news conference tomorrow regarding Frazier.
UPDATE: The Advertiser has updated their "tomorrow's announcement" article to include this:
Embattled Herman Frazier is out as University of Hawai'i's athletic director, according sources familiar with the situation.

Carl Clapp, associate athletic director/administrative services, is expected to be named interim AD.

too little too late in my opinion...he should have been gone long time ago...wasn't it him that pushed coach Riley Wallace out too...look at all the other UH sports programs...volleyball, basketball...doesn't seem like they're doing good at all...i'm glad to see him go...i believe the UH Football program will go into somewhat of a slump for a while...hopefully we can begin to plana rebuild like SMU did for their programs and have an AD as dedicated as Steve Orsini is to SMU...we will tread on...

    some of herman's greatest hits:

    the riley wallace firing
the delay in hiring bob nash
    soap-gate
    the 2007 schedule debacle
    the sugar bowl ticket fiasco
procrastinating in general and taking things for granted, which led to his greatest achievement of all.

i tried putting a positive comment at the end of this post about better days for UH and all that, but i deleted it because it just rang false. these are horrible times for UH athletics. sure we'll get through it, the players are still warriors and will fight through this setback, and who knows, maybe we'll get a competent athletic director and a great coach, but right now i can only think the great coach we lost and how easy it would've been to keep him with just a little bit effort.

HF has gotten off cheap. We have to live with his screw ups. We should charge im with stealing, that what he has done. Taking 250K for NOT doing his job. Thanks to HF we are the laughing stocks of the nation. We are now truely overrated. What other place in the world can you go 12-1 lose a head coach and will have to scramble to field a team the following year? Luck you Live Hawaii. It makes me sick.

i believe that if June Jones stayed at Hawaii, he would be letting his emotions get the best of him...i think he had a sour taste in his mouth from a long time before...it basically came down to this: SMU had the plans laid out, the monetary backing, and what June Jones wanted...UH basically came out with a counter offer that met everything that Jones wanted but he still had that sour taste in his mouth...

with his position at the university, i'm sure he had the insiders view on school politics and such...and i strongly believe he was disgusted on how things were being run, etc, etc...i believe this goes a lot deeper than Herman Frazier, the contract talks, and all that...we need to find where all this is originating from and start reforming from there...

on a side note...i saw a clip of June Jones getting the gatorade shower after winning the Oahu Bowl his first year and he was smiling and laughing...but as years went on you could kinda see his emotions leave his face...more so this year after every win...just something i noticed...

Tombo thanks for all the updates. I have felt sick in my stomach all day. I am glad HF is going. UH needs to clean house, and start fresh. Football, TV contracts, licensing, and recruiting is big business and the rewards are also big business (BCS). I pray that we get a good AD, and good FB coach. Hopefully, this is the wake up call that Hawaii needs to move forward. If not, the Football program along with UH as an academic institution is doomed.

I agree with you Tombo. I'm usually an optomistic person with a positive outlook, but right now I'm so mad!!!!! Pure stupidity!!!! I'm having a real hard time letting go of it because it was so easily avoidable and is so unbelieveable!!! It's such an unbelievably huge loss!! It's insane that it came to this!!!! How the hell did this happen?????? Damn!!!!!!

Good riddance, I say. Hopefully UH can start building a program. I don't think all is lost. It's time to stop mourning Jones and to start encouraging and supporting the UH team and the next head coach. If we can get Norm Chow (with which USC won 2 titles, and none since he left, and who coached 3 QBs who are now NFL starters) we can still recruit and have a great offensive mind as our coach (and hopefully hold on to that star QB who verbally committed). And with Leon Wright-Jackson, a former Nebraska recruit and pure running back, on the roster, we can perhaps develop a run game, which the Sugar Bowl showed us is needed in order to compete with the best of the BCS schools.

Amid this chaos I would not be suprised to see Ryan Grice-Mullen declare for the NFL draft. Thanks Herman, you just set us back 10 years!

I expected next year to be tough, even with June. His play calling was shown up in the Sugar Bowl (MOSTLY AT A RISK TO COLT'S HEALTH.... uuuuh, what's a tight end?). Next year he could have stayed here and gone 9/3 maybe and been a loser or go 5/7 at SMU and be a HERO. Are we fickle? We whine cause he left; we whine cause he got us to pay more for PPV; we whine cause we have to pay more for tickets (still less than many other stadiums!) we whine if we pay more taxes; aw shucks... we whine a lot. Was it Herm? UH? US!? Na Koa should be growing by leaps and bounds. I'M IN. I PAY TO WHINE; not...; I STILL B-E-L-E-I-V-E!!!

Is this what depression feels like?

Seeing the picture of June Jones in his suit with SMU red is just weird.
It's like, thats June Jones. We got so used to seeing him, and then all of a sudden, he's wearing red and in Dallas.

And that quote about the difference in facilities: "You're talking about the NFL and a Pop Warner team." TOO SOON JUNE! TOO SOON! Let us grieve.

I hate to say it, but this AM my kids asked "Why now"? I said, I was ashamed to admit that I felt it was because it would hamper the program more now and in this manner than any other way or time. The NFL vs Pop Warner comment was not said by a "friend". Too bad June. Bad form. Bad judgement (once again). No aloha from the old coach, eh? I have to wonder how many times he'll be saying that while talking to "incoming" recruits (to his shiney new SMU facility instead of our pop warner camp?). Too bad. Maybe I'm depressed; maybe I get it, though.

I know every UH sports fan is upset, but didn't Herman Frazier take the atheltic department from being heavily in-debt to a department now with a profit margin. And what if UH would have played tougher competition this year and lost, they would have been playing in a small bowl game again ... minus the large payout. Is it his fault that UH's dorms are in disrepair or that campus facilities keep burning to the ground. All I am saying is be careful what you ask for, or you may get much worse than Herman Frazier

It's painful, but we'll survive. HF leaving is a good start for change. Heck, thanks to this whole fiasco, I'll probably be buying a football season ticket (which would be for the first time ever), 'cuz I still believe in Graunke and the other players (and hopefully some of the assistant coaches) staying behind.

Found this pretty interesting profile on Norm Chow from ESPN which was done just before the start of his first season with USC. If nothing else, his pass-happy spread offense doesn't seem like a huge change from the run-n-shoot.
