It's safe to say that a decision on the starting QB should be made by the start of next week.
"There's no real hurry because we don't start getting into game planning until next week. We're just not going to rush into it," McMackin said after yesterday afternoon's practice.Stephen Tsai writes that the decision could come tonight. QB coach Nick Rolovich has good things to say about Inoke Funaki, Greg Alexander and Brent Rausch. Also from the article: shuffling of positions along the offensive line, some details about the
"We have 350 throws (taped) on each guy, in team (drills) or 7-on-7. So that's over 1,000 passes that we've analyzed. And they've probably thrown 1,000 more in ball drills.
"All three of them are good quarterbacks, and we just are adding up all the intangibles and pick the guy who gives us the best chance to win."
Junior-college transfers Dustin Blount and Jovonte Taylor have been withheld from practicing while UH awaits certification of their associate degrees.Jason Kaneshiro's Sports Notebook has some news and notes about Keith AhSoon playing center, Daniel Lofton back to practice after a hamstring injury, and some of the young defensive linemen -- Vaughn Meatoga, Haku Correa, Geordon Hanohano and Keahi Watson -- getting a chance to play with the first and second teams.
Both slotbacks already have been accepted into UH.
They completed summer-school sessions at their junior colleges last week.
There is no concern about their UH eligibility, but the missed time has them behind in the competition.
Kaneshiro profiles running back Daniel Libre.
After coming out of obscurity to spark the Warriors running game in the final third of the regular season last fall, Libre is among the Warriors' leaders at running back, a role likely to be shared among UH's diverse group of backs.UPDATE: The contract to install the Cooke/Ching Field turf has been awarded.
"I can feel the difference in practice," said Libre, who averaged 8.3 yards per carry after breaking into the rotation last season. "When I come in I feel the defense keying on me, like they know I might be getting the ball."
A landscape contractor who alleged that a state board member used his position to eliminate competition for million-dollar synthetic turf contracts has won the contract to repair Cooke Field.
The University of Hawaii announced yesterday that Logan Hamocon's company -- Sports Turf Hawaii -- won the bid to replace the synthetic turf at Cooke Field, a practice field for the UH Warriors football team.

I like that the Star-Bulletin has many good sports writers and they now have more opportunities. I also like Reardon now being a sports columnist along with his blog. I am much happier now that that weird sports editor Arnett is no longer writing his weird opinions--it made the Star-Bulletin look bad--next step should be to retire him now that his friend has a job at Temple.
