Training Camp Day 5 Reports
Stephen Tsai has some notes from Friday's practice. Here's an excerpt:
Well, it was indeed hot out there as this morning practice expanded to three hours. On SportsHawaii.com, hilofan65 and parkpill have some observations.
And things heated up with the 1-on-1 drills between the linemen. The best battle was between left tackle Laupepa Letuli and right end Elliott Purcell. Let’s just say it went into overtime.
• Adam Leonard, Clarence “Lafu” Tuioti-Mariner and John Fonoti did not practice because of what are termed as non-serious injuries.
-Inoke had the nicest pass on 11 on 11 drills with a deep post to Greg Salas that looked to go for a TD.
- Looks like LWJ has improved his blocking. He made some really nice ones today picking up blitzers.
-The Defense has a swagger. They know they're good and they don't let the offense have anything.
The highlight for me was watching the 1 on 1 battles when the OLine went up against the DLine. And on WSN, bowstock and cocopop have some notes from the field. An excerpt from cocopop's observations:
-Our D Tackles are nasty! Fale, Rocky, Keala, and Joshua Leonard all did very well. J. Leonard seemed unblockable. Purcell impressed with his moves on the edge.
- Letuli and Purcell mixed it up a bit after the whistle and Mac had to talk to the both of them.
- No surprise, the best OLineman was Estes. Once he locks you up, he pretty much has you beat. Letuli looked pretty good at times as well as the Aussie (Thomas).
• Alexander threw a pass out to the sideline that covered about 35 yards in the air--on an absolute rope and dead on the money...NICE.Thanks to all the professional and amateur reporters!
• Blaze Soares is quick to the ball and seems to be unconcerned with any interference. At one point, I think it was Washington (or Bain, I can't remember) who was supposed to impede him from getting outside. Blaze kinda brushed by as if he wasn't even there.
• Watching Libre during drills says a lot about his character IMO. He always finishes the drill, running past the last defender or coach at full speed. (I've noticed that very few of the guys do this--letting up once past the initial touch or after the first 5 yards or so.) Maybe this is because he's in better condition than the others, but I like the effort and focus. To my uneducated eye, he looks surprisingly quick and strong (for his body type).
