Training Camp Day 3 Wrap-Ups

Jason Kaneshiro takes a look at how the QBs did yesterday in 7-on-7s and 11-on-11s.
"Seven-on-seven was much better than team for us," quarterback coach Nick Rolovich said. "It tells us they understand it conceptually, but now you throw a rush in front of them, that kind of threw them off so that's something we need to work on.

"We needed the competition," he added. "Now we'll see separation. The grade sheets have been fairly even so far."
Stephen Tsai highlights how the defense is helping the offense get better.
"We have such a good defense," Funaki said. "If we can compete and be consistent while moving the ball against our own defense, it should make things a lot easier when we play against other teams that are less familiar with our offense."

Rolovich has set a goal of the offense trying to be best at every practice.

"I take it off my experience playing this offense," said Rolovich, a UH quarterback in 2000 and 2001. "When you can beat your own defense, which knows your plays, and beat them every day, then we can beat anybody in the country. That's where we need to get, to beat these guys every day."
Tsai also writes that incoming JC slotback Jovonte Taylor should be cleared to practice soon, QBs Bryant Moniz and Kiran Kepo'o will apparently not play for the Warriors this season, Jake Heun missed his second practice because of a calf injury, and Liko Satele has been added to the roster.

Blaze Soares, who made an interception in yesterday's drills, talks about remaining healthy this year.
Soares has had to change his mind-set somewhat, figuring out how to tone down his ferocity while still going at full speed every play.

"I don't want to be known as the kid that always gets hurt, which I've been known for," Soares said. "I want to change that. Back then, I was just reckless trying to kill everybody in sight. This year I'm just trying to be more smart with the choices I make."
The Star-Bulletin Sports Notebook has news about Ray Hisatake taking some reps at guard.
"My chances will be better to play if I know both positions and I feel real comfortable at guard, like it's a more natural fit for me," said Hisatake, a defensive lineman in junior college who hadn't played guard before yesterday. "You always get excited to learn when you're in a new environment. If I know guard, then I'll know tackle better."
There's also a short profile on graduate assistant David Gilmore, along with some news and notes.

And Dave Reardon is offering readers an opportunity to get their thoughts about UH football or any other sports printed in the Star-Bulletin.
Provide your take on UH football, or any other sports topic, and I’ll consider putting the “Best of the Blog” in Friday’s column. Two rules: Keep it short and keep it clean.

QBs, Injuries, Schmitt, Favre -- We've Got It All

Jim Zorn said he might rotate his quarterbacks differently Saturday than he did in the preseason opener. Starter Jason Campbell will again open the game with the first team, but rookie Colt Brennan might go in next instead of back-up Todd Collins.

Zorn wants to see Brennan operate in different aspects of the offense, considering that a few weeks from now Brennan will be banished to holding a clipboard for another year as he develops. "We may mix and match here as we go on," Zorn said.

Regardless, Collins and Brennan will be playing a lot again, with the starters out there for three series, tops.

    Zorn's QB Plan; Strictly Unrestricted

After practice Jim Zorn talked a bit about his quarterback plan for Saturday and said that he might rotate Todd Collins and Colt Brennan after Jason Campbell gets his plays in. He said it would depend on the situation, but he'd like to get Brennan some two-minute work, since, he said, after a couple of games he won't have the opportunity to see Brennan play again for a year. So don't be surprised if Brennan comes in before Collins.
