Training Camp Day 4 Wrap-Ups
Here's a CC compilation of last night's newscasts. There's stories about UH training camp, NFL preseason games, UH fans traveling to Florida, and a lot of people, including Greg McMackin, speaking out against proposed budget cuts to JV sports in Hawaii high schools.
Stephen Tsai writes that running back Jake Heun may have a serious injury.
And in Dave Reardon's "D Line" column about how teh internets makes it harder for teams to prepare trick plays (without closing practices), Aaron Kia gives a shoutout to WarriorMojo for posting his trick play TD from the Warrior Bowl on Youtube. And here it is:
Stephen Tsai writes that running back Jake Heun may have a serious injury.
Running back Jake Heun today will learn the severity of a lower-back injury that has kept him from participating in the past three practices of the Hawai'i football team's training camp. The article also includes news and notes about the progress of the other running backs in camp, Rick Taylor's hopes to make the Florida travel squad, Steele Jantz embracing of his scout team role, and the quote of the day, from Blaze Soares:
It is believed he might be suffering from a herniated disc. He is scheduled to undergo medical tests today.
"Hopefully, it's sooner than later," Heun said of his return. "They think it's a disc thing going on, but they're not really sure what the deal is."
In the 7-on-7 drill, slotback Aaron Bain caught a pass from Jake Santos. Soares hit Bain, knocking free Bain's helmet.Well, lookie there! Aaron Bain talks about getting hit by Blaze.
"It wasn't intentional," Soares said. "He just came across the middle. I was there. I gave him a nice whack, and apparently his helmet came off."
"We all expect to get one of those every now and then, but it's all good. That means every one's practicing at a high level. You always have to look out for Blaze," Bain said with a smile. "The job is to catch the rock, so I had to go up and get it."Billy Hull profiles defensive end C.J. Allen-Jones, who's been turning heads in practice. Some quotes from Inoke Funaki and Dave Aranda:
"He's got that speed, you know, big legs," Funaki said. "He came back a lot bigger, and I think it was a good move to bring him down from linebacker to defensive end. He's going to do some great things."
"We expected great things from C.J. coming in to this fall camp and he has exceeded our expectations," Aranda said. "We had a meeting (Wednesday) morning, talking about who's done what, and C.J. was the guy who around the room everyone was saying he's really shown up to play."Leila Wai profiles defensive end Elliott Purcell.
Practicing with the first unit brought a change of pace for Purcell. The article mentions that John Fonoti may be out for a while with a hamstring injury:
"It felt good; it was pretty fast. Faster than twos and threes," Purcell said.
"He's focused and there's been a vigor in him so far this camp and it speaks well for his future here," said Aranda, who added that Purcell has all the tools, but needs to work on his consistency.
Purcell acknowledged that, saying "I do a lot of good things, just not consecutively. It's like, spurts, so I just have to put it together."
Fonoti "popped" his hamstring during Wednesday's conditioning drills and said he would be out for a week to a week and a half. The Star-Bulletin Sports Notebook has news about Leon Wright-Jackson's big run in practice yesterday, movement along the defensive line, and the progress of the offense.
"I'm going to try to get out earlier than that but I don't want to get out too early and pull it again and make it worse," he said.

Nice to have lots of local coverage about the UH football team.
Very different from Florida where Coach Meyer has now closed all practices from media and fans. Go to this link to see what a blogger had to do to see the practice from so many feet away--to give a report.

Fourth Practice – August 7th
I got to practice around 7:00 (it was supposed to have started at 6:00). I walked up to the gate and was surrounded by four security people (mostly 18 year old girls). They told me that not only could I not go in, but that I had to stand 20 yards back from the gate! There were security people everywhere (including on top of the parking garage where I thought I could camp out...dammit!).
Fans were pissed. A bunch walked up and were turned away. Many had driven an hour or two to get there. About 50 people stayed outside ("move back please") and waited with footballs and stuff to get signed.
