Training Camp Day 1 Reports

UPDATE: Tonight's fall camp news compilation from the Mighty Chawan.

Be sure to check out the KHNL, KHON, KGMB and KITV sports pages for more videos, transcripts, stories, etc.

UPDATE 2: Here's an AP article about Hawaii's first day of practice.

======

Here are some observations from the first day of training camp. The excerpts are focused mostly on the QBs, but the reports have a lot more info. Thanks to all who took the time to write them.

From the UH Athletics website:
"I thought the quarterbacks did very well," McMackin said. "I was down there watching them quite a bit. (Offensive coordinator) Ron (Lee) felt that for this time of the year, we're ahead of where we're been. The throwers were throwing the ball, guys were catching it. They were missing it a little early, but they got refocused and started catching the ball. So, I think it's going pretty good.
As the Warriors wrapped up practice at noon, the temperature in Manoa Valley neared 90 degrees similar to the weather UH will see in Gainesville for the season-opener. To prepare for the heat and humidity in Gainesville, the Warriors are putting more of an emphasis on conditioning.
From hilo65 on Sportshawaii.com (also includes a report from WarriorMojo):
4) Defense looks confident. It seems like they are sure of themselves out there.
5) All three quarterbacks seemed a little rusty to me. All of them made some nice throws but none really stood out.
-Funaki: Is in great shape. He was the first to finish in all conditioning drills along with Daniel Libre and others. Funaki looked the most confortable.
- Alexander: Big. nice size and had some nice throws. He looked a little uncomfortable at times but was pretty good.
- Raucsh: Also tall but not as big as Alexander. He seemed to struggle more than the other QB's. He did have a few nice throws that made me say "Ooh."
From bowstock on WSN:
If you think Colt had a gun, than Alexander has a howitzer.
No comparison to Funaki or Rausch.

He tossed a bullet 30 yards down field to the right sideline from the left hashmark.
The ball was still rising when it was snaged.

It's still early, so many other things and intangibles, but Alexander stood out.

Inoke did OK and Rausch needs more work.

At this point, JMO, it's betw Aleander and Funaki.
From manoaFAN on WSN:
If the game were this week, I think Alexander would get the nod. He showed solid footwork, decisiveness (on the first day), velocity (he was flinging the ball all over the field) and accuracy (all patterns). He just seemed like he knew what he was doing out there and his throws got out noticeably quicker than those of the other QBs during 7-on-7s.
And from the Warrior Beat, bad news regarding Francis Maka's petition for a medical hardship:
Defensive end Francis Maka said he will not play for the Warriors this season. He said his application for a sixth year was not approved. Instead, he will serve as a student assistant. He is scheduled to earn a bachelor’s degree in December.
Glad he'll still be able to help the team and earn his degree.

Feel like I stay at UH to watch da pratices. U da bestest Tombo. Alexander & Funaki combo would be a good way to start the McMackin era. Both are different and bring good things to the team. Still interested in the progress of SA, BR, JS, and JS.

Sorry for all these little links--some may be a few days old. Have fun reading--I hope I didn't duplicate anything from Tombo. I also threw in something about Florida at the end.

Weeding Through the Depth of Roster Battles

    By Lane Adkins

    Posted Aug 3, 2008

Shaun Rogers, Shaun Smith, Corey Williams and Robaire Smith are keepers, the rest the depth is up in the air. 2007 draftees Chase Pittman and Melila Purcell have added bulk, but this does not appear to have given either play an advantage in gaining a roster spot. Rookies Ahtyba Rubin and Brian Schaefering are in the mix, as well as the improving Louis Leonard. Rubin has not impressed in training camp, many expected this NT to be consistent in clogging up the middle of the defense, but this has not been the case. As a drafted rookie the team may be inclined to keep him on the roster, which will be interesting in the event he does not step up his game in sessions. Leonard is developing and could play the role of a depth player for the team heading into the 2008 season, he has been inconsistent in sessions, but is rarely blown off the point of attack, as some others competing for a roster spot have been.

Pittman and Purcell have shown little, but there has been some glimpses that these two defensive ends could be turning the corner.

11:51 -- First-round CB Mike Jenkins has extra tape over his left shoe. We'll try to find out why after practice. ... Mat McBriar just boomed a punt that had Adam "Pacman" Jones backpedaling to catch it. Jones and Patrick Crayton are catching punts, but they aren't returning them. ... The punt team isn't running downfield, either. Looks like they're working on blocking assignments.

    OTHER BATTLE FRONTS

Selwyn Lymon vs. Davone Bess and Anthony Anderson for a backup spot in the WR corps -- Lymon has impressed the coaching staff with his ability to outleap the smaller DBs for passes in the red zone. He had one of two TD catches in Saturday's scrimmage on a lob into the end zone from Josh McCown. Anderson had a big drop of a perfectly thrown bomb by McCown. Bess remains the favorite for the slot job with his glue-like hands and ability to create separation in the middle of the field.

    Looked Good:

    - Isaac Sopoaga. His best move is a bull rush, and he used it to put Tony Wragge on his backside on separate plays.

It's OK to start thinking football

    By Jim Thomas
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

    LB Pisa Tinoisamoa

Fast and fearless, Tinoisamoa led the Rams in tackles in each of his first three NFL seasons. Then, injuries caught up with him. He has missed 12 of 32 games over the past two seasons because of a variety of ailments, and has been slowed in several other contests. The Rams' linebacking corps isn't the same without him in the lineup. With Tinoisamoa and Will Witherspoon both up and running, the Rams have a pair of heat-seeking missiles in their front seven. Tinoisamoa isn't afraid to take on blockers, but despite his aggressive style he is also a calming influence. A full 16 games from him would be a huge plus.

    UF FOOTBALL
Gators hope to blaze trail to national title
With a plethora of offensive talent and speed, and a Heisman quarterback, UF is focused on the BCS trophy.
Posted on Mon, Aug. 04, 2008

    BY JOSEPH GOODMAN

    GAINESVILLE --
    Speed, depth and experience.

Stability, more speed and a Heisman Trophy winner at quarterback.

Everything seems to be in order for a run at a national championship this season for the Florida Gators as practice begins Monday.

    DIFFERENT LOOKS

The offensive staff will use fall camp to work on two added wrinkles to the Gators' spread-option: a no-huddle look and a power formation featuring two tight ends. Florida began implementing the no-huddle during the spring, and the tight ends set will be unveiled this week. The Gators' tight ends are senior Cornelius Ingram, who passed on the NFL Draft in April, and sophomore Aaron Hernandez.

''We have a luxury this year,'' Meyer said. ``We have two very good tight ends, two guys that are going to be playing football for a living if they stay healthy. So you'll see two tight ends in the game at the same time quite often because they're both dynamic receivers.''

The Gators appear to have ample options at the receiver position as well. Harvin is considered a preseason Heisman Trophy candidate, and senior Louis Murphy is projected by NFL Draft analysts to be one of the top receiver prospects in 2009.

Junior Riley Cooper is primed for a breakout season, and Belle Glade native Deonte Thompson, a redshirt freshman, is considered a rising talent.

Florida also bolstered its roster with the addition of junior college transfer Carl Moore, considered one of the best recruiting prospects in 2007.
