Ferd Lewis has an article about soaring fuel costs, the shutdown of Aloha Airlines and ATA, and how it's all affecting the Warriors' travel plans.
Lewis writes a column about how future scheduling will be affected, with more road games for UH.
"Charter costs are just unbelievable now for us," Donovan said. "It is getting to be stratospheric."
For example, Donovan said the Warriors paid $85,000 to charter to San Jose, Calif. for last year's game with the Spartans and $125,000 to Idaho for the game with the Vandals, but have been quoted a $319,000 fare for Fresno State this year.
As a result, Donovan said the Warriors may look to a mix of commercial and charter flights this season. We need Richard Branson to become a UH football fan.
"Combos are going to have to become more of a reality," Donovan said.
The Warriors had hoped to charter from Honolulu to Gainesville, Fla., for their season-opening game at Florida. But the limited availability of affordable charters means they will fly commercially to and from Atlanta and only charter between Atlanta and Gainesville, officials said.

From talks with prospective opponents, Donovan said teams from Bowl Championship Series conferences that, in the past, might have played a game or two here without asking for a home game are now, almost without fail, demanding a return matchup. In addition, the Warriors' success in concert with recent leaps in fuel and travel costs have made possible opponents more circumspect in negotiations.Joe Mayes of RealFootball365 writes about the importance of Samson Satele to the Miami Dolphins.
He is now entering his second season and will be expected to call the signals for what is arguably the most important unit on the field. Every offensive play will start with the ball in his hands. And finally, Chawan Cut found this KGMB news story from a few days ago of Ryan Grice-Mullen at Houston Texans minicamp.
And unlike quarterback John Beck, he has virtually no competition at his position going into the 2008 season.

So, it will cost more for each away game because of the cost of oil and its effect on air travel. I guess the guarantee that UH gets for signing with like Florida, Oregon State and Washington State are "itched in stone" and cannot be changed. So could Hawaii lose money on away games?
On the other side, does that mean that in the future, UH would need to offer more for other schools to come to play UH in Hawaii? I can see more BCS schools canceling contracts if they could lose money or the game or both.
So Hawaii could lose either way?
Another thought--does Hawaii usually guarantee money or airfare to get an opponent to come to Hawaii? Didn't UH in 2007 play someone in which UH guaranteed the airfare plus money? I could be wrong.

yeah, it's looking like UH will lose both ways. they'll have to spend more to go to multiple road games (minimum distance 2600 miles each way), and pay teams more money to come to hawaii, and probably revise existing contracts.
definitely will hurt UH the most with all the miles traveled in one year. and i can't imagine any more future road games being played on the east coast and vice versa.
let's hope that the rumoured gigantic monetary donation will come through...
