SMU and June Jones

SMU is offering June Jones some big bucks.
Southern Methodist University has offered Hawai'i coach June Jones between $1.7 million and $2 million to become its football coach, according to two sources.
Dave Reardon talks to June's agent Leigh Steinberg about the situation.
The Hawaii coach's agent was still awaiting a contract proposal from Hawaii athletic director Herman Frazier yesterday, and Leigh Steinberg said "outside pressures" were putting Jones in a position where he would have to decide soon whether he will remain at UH.

Steinberg would not say the letters S-M-U, but it is clear that the Dallas school is the source of the pressure.
"We have not had a proposal from Hawaii," Steinberg said yesterday afternoon. "It's unclear when that might come. June will be in a position quite soon where a decision will need to be made."

Frazier did not respond to media requests yesterday, but UH-Manoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw addressed the situation in a news release.

"I know that there is a great deal of interest in ensuring that June Jones remains here as our football coach -- and that is definitely our goal as well. ... It has always been our intent to make Coach Jones a firm offer that will keep him here, and I want to assure everyone that (Frazier) is moving expeditiously to do just that," Hinshaw said in a statement.
Frazier said earlier that he won't negotiate the contract through the media, or something to that effect. Turns out he wasn't negotiating at all. Sounds about right. But also sounds like the wheels are now in motion to get this thing done. I still believe.

Paul Arnett writes that June Jones should leave unless the school makes more of an investment in the program.

And Leila Fujimori has details of an autograph session with several now former UH players held at Kahala Mall last night.

I believe in JJ, his coaching staff, the Warriors, the equipment manager, the graduate assistants, the towel boy, the ball girls, the guys who keep the cords untangled on the sidelines, the guys who run the fans, the kid who grabs the kickoff tee, the people who pick up the rubbish, these men and women, boys and girls I believe in whole heartedly! HF however, I do not. If he drops this, or is waiting for some divine intervention that he can later call a plan like he did with our schedule, I have waiting on back order several gallons of tar and have been picking chicken feathers since the Sugar Bowl.

    Tombo,
Glad you made is back safely from NO. Good to hear from you again.

Let's hope that HF moves on this ASAP. If he screws this up, he better get on the fastest plane/boat to nowhere.

I think that JJ and the staff deserve the biggest raise possible. Screw the budget. It wasn't balanced for over 20+ years anyway and they still kept funding lousy coaches/teams. Now when the first real winning opportunity comes along, they better not start getting tight w/ the cash. This is the first chance they have had to actually make some big profits if they spend till it hurts. Think small and we will stay small.

All Warrior fans and doubters thereof should consider the following scores when analyzing whether Hawaii competes at the SEC level given the 41-10 Sugar Bowl score:

    Georgia WON the following games:

    48-20 against Auburn

    45-17 against Ole Miss

    45-16 against West Carolina

    Georgia LOST the following game:

    35-14 against Tennessee

So if all the Hawaii doubters think that the Warriors don't belong, well, I guess we are in pretty good company w/ Auburn, Ole Miss and West Carolina.

The Hawai'i fan base at the Sugar Bowl was outstanding, the team had a spectacular season and they captured the imagination of College Football fans all over the country. I am a UH grad who has been living and working on the east coast for the last 21 years and have never seen more interest in UH Football. As I was leaving to New Orleans I had a lot of friends and family wishing UH luck.

The Football program deserves the Lions share of the profits netted from the Sugar Bowl appearance. It is no secret that contributions from alumni and other supporters are positively linked to winning seasons. June Jones, his staff and the football program have contributed to the University in a very positive way, it is time to pay back the athletic department by paying the coaching staff upgrading the facilities and allowing them to create a winning tradition.

    June Jones Contract Negotiations
I hope June Jones will stay in Hawaii, but I don’t think the University of Hawaii should break the bank in trying to keep him. If June Jones is not satisfied with $800K per year, then maybe it is time for him to move on. Yes, June Jones had a wonderful season in 2007 and is to be congratulated. But, as everyone in the nation who watched the Sugar Bowl, we all seen that the University of Hawaii is not in the same league as the other BSC ranked teams.

West Virginia has made Bill Stewart their new head coach of the West Virginia Mountaineers football team and is paying him $800K per season. Bill Stewart led the West Virginia Mountaineers football team to a victory in the Fiesta Bowl. The West Virginia Mountaineers football team is ranked ninth in the nation.

I wish June Jones all the best in his future endeavors and hope he is satisfied with the $800K he is currently receiving at the University of Hawaii. If not, its see you later
