Looking Like McMackin

According to ESPN's Joe Schad:
Hawaii is expected to announce Greg McMackin as the successor to June Jones at a news conference on Wednesday, two sources familiar with the situation said Monday.

An official announcement will not come until Wednesday, at the earliest. Barring anything "highly unusual" occurring between today and Wednesday, as one source stated, McMackin will be named coach.
UPDATE: But first, McMackin needs to be interviewed.
University of Hawai'i defensive coordinator Greg McMackin is set to interview for the UH head coaching job tomorrow, according to sources familiar with the situation.
George Lumpkin, UH's associate head coach the past nine years, also will be interviewed.

Tomorrow is the first day in which UH can review applicants. UH was required to post the opening for the position for five days. It was posted on the UH site last Tuesday.
And on his blog, Stephen Tsai writes that Norm Chow did not apply for the position.

This could pose a problem, how does Espn have the inside scoop or is this so Mac has problems and ends up going to SMU w/ Jones. This is stupid it is suppose to be a closed committee hiring not leaks to the press.....dummies.

It's the same situation where ESPN finds outside sources to get inside scoops, like when no one knew that June was resigning from UH yet, but one of his personal friends prematurely confirmed that he was leaving.

That's just what ESPN does.. no need to get upset about it.

Is this the same type of inside information like Miles was leaving LSU for Michigan? ESPN is trying to dictate an opposite outcome, again? ESPN BUTT OUT.

I wonder who is the source? Was it JJ's article in the newspaper. Of course, McMackin is the lead canidate with endorsements from the team, Na Koa, fans, media, and JJ. Nobody really knows until its official. This is all speculation.

This could also be a big problem if a canidate who does not get the job gets disgruntled, and claims that UH was not fair (i.e. racial, age, religious discrimination). I am sure UH is aware of the various groups that closely monitors the hiring process to make sure Blacks are not discriminated against.

I hope UH is smart enough to dispell ESPN and say no decision has yet been made, and all canidates will be a fair look. Then on Wednesday, name McMakin as HC for the #1 reason is that he has support of the players, #2 reason is that he has support of the present coaches, and #3 reason he has support of Na Koa and fans who are the ones who are needed to have a successful Football program.

I hate to be a complainer, but I still think that Big Mac is the wrong choice for head coach. History and common sense have shown that with most teams, the strengths follow the head coach's orientation, whether he is more offensive or defensive minded. I can see why many favor Big Mac out of sentimental reasons and his defensive accomplishments, but while vastly improved in national stats (including 2 games against I-AA teams), Hawaii's defense still has a long way to go, as evidenced by the # of points we gave away in our last 3 games against Boise St., Washington and Georgia. If Mac stays as head coach, the defense will continue to improve, but not to the level of a BCS conference. And the offense will not improve, as our 4 top receivers have left and JJ was our offensive coordinator. Who will Mac get to replace him?

Ideally, we should get an offensive minded, proven coach, like Chow or Gilbride (who are both offensive coordinators in the NFL), and have Mac stay as defensive coordinator.
If Mac is head coach, it'll be a while before we are on top of the WAC again. We also need a head coach who can bring in the recruits...can Mac bring them in?

    franksabunch,

You got some good points. I just think McMackin and Ron Lee deserve the chance with doing so well and with so little support at UH. The players we got are meant for this system, for better or worse. McMackin will help ease our broken hearts, and try to hang to our momentum. And, no fix unless it's broken. Why can't we be like BSU and continue the ride. It's worth the shot.

The big question with Chow and Gilbride is whether they can work with UH AD, UH President, Na Koa, and legislature. Many think McMackin can, and ensure that UH Athletics department gets the improvements that is needed. The willingness of the community and legislature to work with McMackin is a huge asset to UH Athletics. If all McMackin does is keep the team in the top 3 in the WAC, and if he gets the facilities turned around, McMackin might be considered the most productive coach for UH Athletics to get to the next level. We don't know if Chow or Gilbride will play politics rights with our fickle legislature and UH administrators. More is at stake than just the stats of the offensive, but the whole athletic department upgrades. This is why many think McMackin has become the right coach for what UH needs now.

gotta take these "according to sources" reports with a grain of salt, no matter how reliable the source. remember, there was an SUPER INSIDE SOURCE last year that said colt brennan was GUARANS BABARINS leaving for the NFL. things change, minds change, etc.

as for mcmackin, i like him as head coach. he's a great coach, a great person and a great recruiter. he lets his coaches coach, loves his players, knows what it takes to win, has connections throughout the country (for hiring new coaches), loves hawaii, and on and on. so i'm sold!

as for the offensive coordinator, if mac's coach, all signs point to ron lee, which i'm really excited about. he knows the run-and-shoot, having learned it directly from mouse davis, learned more under JJ, ran the offense at st. louis when they were winning prep bowl after prep bowl. stephen tsai and coach ken on sportshawaii had great things to say about lee (i'll link back if i can find those quotes)

so those are some reasons i'm optimistic for the future of the UH football team if mac is in charge.

here's the link to coachken's endorsement for mcmackin, ron lee and the other coaches. coach ken is the father of UH slotback rick taylor, and once coached at nease high school in florida. he says more further down the thread. i can't find stephen's comment, but will link to it if i do.

I agree with you Tombo, I feel it will be a much smoother transition leading into next season if MAC gets in as HC and the Lee brothers take care of the offense.

The players won't have to learn a whole new system, they will have more time to improve their existing skills from this current system instead as they prepare for next season. This should keep our defense in tack.

I strongly feel that the Lee brothers will improve our offense by using more of the run mixed with the run n shoot.

Time to let the Lee brothers shine and keep Hawai'i in the rankings!

I am sticking w/ Tombo Ahi's comments about the coaching staff, he's been on it, and Kaimuki boy you got it on the head, take all this news with a grain of salt, need to have (the hiring committee) them make sure they interview all qualified applicants. I do not believe it will be a long while to be on top, we are on a national stage spotlight now. The State needs to step up, do we want our UH Warriors to shine @ our first game in Florida? or continue on as naysayers to our program? I say "go for it" Hawaii, I trust the coaches we are going to have left and Graunke finally gets a chance to shine. We still need to believe and not let JJ's leaving, also make us leave our support behind.

    GO WARRIORS!!!!

I agree w/ franksabunch. I think in the long run it is a mistake to hire Mac because we won't have the powerhouse offensive coach we need to take it to the next level. Mac is the easy choice but not necessarily the best.
