Fab 50: 1992 UH Football Team
Kyle Sakamoto takes a look back at the 1992 UH football team as part of the Advertiser's Fab 50 celebration.
For those who weren't around in 1992 or are a bit fuzzy on that season, the Rainbows — not the Warriors — reached a number of milestones, such as:Here are some highlights from the 1992 Holiday Bowl from the awesome 2120kaohu:
# Most victories in a season and highest winning percentage: 11-2 (both since surpassed).
# First Western Athletic Conference title (shared with BYU and Fresno State). "There's so much to talk about," Amosa said. "The biggest attribute we had as a team was everybody got along. Everyone knew what they had to do. Everyone believed in themselves."
# Played in program's first Mainland bowl (Holiday Bowl in San Diego).
# Won first bowl game: 27-17 over Illinois. "It was great to represent the WAC as champions in the Holiday Bowl. We beat a very good Illinois team," said head coach Bob Wagner.
# Finished in Top 20 of both major polls (AP and coaches) for first time. "We had a lot of different personalities, but we were able to bring all that together and create a family atmosphere," said senior receiver Darrick Branch. "We had a family vibe in the locker room. It was magical in a lot of ways."

The official Holiday Bowl website has some clips of the '92 game too.
That was a really great team. Michael Carter might be second only to Tracy Ham among quarterbacks to run Paul Johnson's offense. I remember the Pitt game that year... Ivin Jasper was both a slotback and the backup quarterback. Carter threw to Jasper on one play where Jasper was the furthest man back in a triple stack; kind of like a WR screen. Jasper caught the pass, took about two steps forward, then threw back to Carter on the other side of the field. Carter had all kinds of daylight and a wall of blockers in front of him. Good players, fun playcalling... Just an entertaining team to watch.

I'm really looking forward to this game. UH's offense has a lot of weapons this year that the national sportswriters are overlooking. And I can't wait to see what Ricky Dobbs will do for Navy as a full-time starter. Should be a high-powered ground vs air battle!

If the O/U on the game is less than 60, take the over.
I've been looking forward to this game ever since it was scheduled. We'll have to do some kind of blog exchange that week.
