Trip to Japan, Herman Frazier's Legacy
Dave Reardon has a column about Greg McMackin and Jim Donovan's trip to Japan.
For your typical football fan, annual visits to American Samoa make sense. Plenty of potential future Warriors there. Also, the joint venture last year with June Jones' SMU staff doubled as a medical mission, so who can argue with that? And Ferd Lewis has a column on the "land mines" former UH athletic director Herman Frazier left behind.
And Australia appears to be the cradle of UH punters.
Japan? Another matter.
Jones shared Donovan's longtime vision of an Asia full of Warrior fans and made some visits to Japan to spread the gospel. He got Fresno State coach Pat Hill on board, too, even talking about a game there.
McMackin said his eyes were opened when he was with the 49ers and Masafumi Kawaguchi drew a throng of Japanese media in brief summer camp stints.
Between the athletic department deficit, controversy surrounding women's basketball coach Jim Bolla, the struggles of the men's basketball team and June Jones' departure, Frazier's impact is still being felt.
The school's Board of Regents were told of a $5.4 million accumulated deficit in the athletic department by an independent auditor, almost all of it acquired on Frazier's watch. Prior to his arrival in 2002, the athletic department had run at a surplus for at least six of the previous seven years.
Frazier's inability to run a solvent program, much less put away anything for a rainy day, has come back to haunt UH in these austere times.

I don't like Frazier. He either did nothing at all or he did dumb things.
What bothers me is who was over seeing what he was or was not doing? Where was either of the two Manoa Chancellors, the UH President, the Board of Regents, Legislators or the Govenor? How could someone survive for so many years with nothing to show as evidence that he basically did nothing? Yeah I know, supposedly they are still learning from each mistake--isn't this the 100th year for UH or something like that?
Could this be an indication that the UH has something wrong in the coaches contracts where they cannot complain about the "system" or they will be reprimanded? Why did not one coach complain about Frazier? Or if any coach did complain, did Frazier bury it? Somehow something doesn't seem right that UH had to pay for Frazier to go away. Is that why Bolla supposedly was contacting an attorney--did he learn that UH will pay for him to leave like his friend Frazier? Whomever does the hiring needs to do a much better job.

This guy is just plain incompetent ! I feel sorry for us as a state with ONLY ONE Div.1 Football team that we even lose a quality coach like June Jones . The SMU guys just extend Jones 2 more years until 2014 . They must be laughing hard at us right now . The Management at UH deserve to be fired , starting with the Chancellor . Frazier was a friend of Doebel , the UH president , that is why he was able to get away with such incompetence ,Too BAD , we as a state have to pay for his stupidity ...sigh! Got to feel sorrryyyy for our sorry a.
