Alex Dunnachie Commits to UH (w/UPDATES)

Jason Kaneshiro writes that Australian punter Alex Dunnachie will become a Warrior.
Dunnachie's background is in Australian Rules Football, and he is still learning the American style of kicking. Dunnachie was on his way to California to attend the Ray Guy/Prokick.com Academy's camp in Walnut Creek yesterday.

"He looks like a major college tight end," said camp director Rick Sang, who has followed Dunnachie's development. "He's very talented. He's got natural power, he's got a really strong leg. ... He's a raw talent, and he's getting better."

Sang said Dunnachie worked under Nathan Chapman, who runs a kicking program in Australia, and his distance figures to improve as he refines his technique.
Stephen Tsai has some numbers on Dunnachie.
Dunnachie said he "consistently hit it 65, 70 yards."

Rick Sang, co-founder of the Ray Guy Academy, said Dunnachie has had several punts with hang times in excess of 5 seconds.
Holy moly.
As for choosing UH, Dunnachie said: "This place is paradise."

UH has reserved one more scholarship.
Congrats and welcome to Alex!

UPDATE: ProkickAustralia has video of Dunnachie working on some punting drills. He almost hits the cameraman standing 70 yards away starting at around 4:50 in. Bonus feature: The video has a somewhat out-of-place porno music soundtrack. Awww yeah.

UPDATE 2 (3/1/09): Here's Stephen Tsai's full article on Dunnachie.
While other schools have had an interest, Dunnachie said: "I've always been one-tracked on Hawai'i. I can't pass up this opportunity. It's unbelievable."

Dunnachie, who completed his UH recruiting visit Friday, made his commitment yesterday.

Dunnachie described Hawai'i as being "paradise."

"I'm not much of a surfer, but I love the water," Dunnachie said. "I'm pretty laid back. Hawai'i is perfect for me."

Brave comment from an anoymous person! Having seen him first hand kick an Aussie Rules football out of sight, I would expect him to be a success story for the University of Hawaii. Darren Tindale Melbourne , Australia

I find it hilarious that the UH coaches blew off some of the best talent in the nation at the punter position... for a guy who has never competitively played American football... wow this should be interesting.

Any Americans questioning an Aussies ability to kick a football (even yours) need only type in aussie rules football into youtube and let the education begin. Our game makes Aussies natural born punters in big bodies that have no issues with physical contact and I'm not surprised that scouts are locking in more Aussies as punters - currently 3 in the NFL McBriar, Graham and Rocca

Good to see an Aussie taking a "Punt", the education will be great and anything could happen. Will be intresting to see how he handles the big crowds and a punt rush, with no previous experience.
Brad Wing from Melbourne Aust.just committed to LSU in the SEC with only one year at a high school. In the Louisianna state final he averaged 50.2 yds gross with a 46 net.
    Go Aussies
