UNGL On Hold
The United National Gridiron League has postponed its scheduled February 8th debut until March 22nd.
League CEO Marvin Tomlin said the delay stems from its primary investor withdrawing from his financial commitment. As I posted previously, ex-UH football players Karl Noa, Myron Newberry, Gerard Lewis, Ryan Keomaka and James Michael Bessard are on UNGL team rosters. Let's hope the league can find new investors, which doesn't sound like an easy task in this economy.
"We are very disappointed considering we had everything in place from team rosters to coaches, general managers and stadiums," Tomlin said. "We will, however, use this time period to engage previous investors as well as entertain new ones."
The UNGL still plans to begin play with 48-man teams in eight cities: Dallas, Miami, Akron, Birmingham, Shreveport, Columbus (Ga.), Winston-Salem and Norfolk. The Connecticut-based UNGL hopes to eventually become a feeder system to the NFL and has even met with league officials to discuss the possibility of a future partnership.
