UH vs Boise State Wrap-Ups

HawaiiAthletics.com has a post-game press release which has links to a box score, notes and quotes.

Jason Kaneshiro has a game summary and wrap-up.
After the Broncos avenged the loss at Aloha Stadium, the Warriors were resigned to crossing out the top line of their three-item list of targets with retaining the WAC title apparently out of reach.

"We have two more goals - we want to graduate 100 percent of our players and we want to go to a bowl game," said McMackin, who conceded "it would take a miracle" for the Warriors to get back in title contention.

"We have six games and we have to win four of them. That's what our goal is. Hopefully we win all of them."
Stephen Tsai's wrap-up is titled "House of blues":
Moore completed 25 of 33 passes for 256 yards. He was not intercepted nor sacked in 37 passing situations.

"He always gets it off a split second before you can hit him," UH defensive end David Veikune said. "He was getting irritating. But he has a lot of poise. I give him that. Usually you can rattle a freshman, but it didn't seem he was rattled at all. The second play, I think, I blasted him. But he still played his game. I give him a lot of credit."
Kaneshiro has an injury update:
Hawaii's offense took a hit when leading rusher Kealoha Pilares sprained his ankle in the first quarter and did not return. Pilares gained 19 yards on seven carries.

"We really missed him as a running back and a receiver," UH offensive coordinator Ron Lee said.

Cornerback Ryan Mouton and safety Erik Robinson also didn't finish the game, leaving with sprained ankles in the fourth quarter. Coach Greg McMackin said they'll probably play next week.

Defensive tackle Keala Watson was helped from the field in the second quarter, but returned to action.
Francis Maka also suffered a concussion in his 2008 debut.

Kaneshiro writes that Inoke Funaki tied a school record with five interceptions in a game, but will remain the starter.
Hawaii coach Greg McMackin said there isn't a quarterback controversy brewing. Funaki is expected to remain the starter heading into next week's home game against Nevada.

"I thought Inoke did some great things in the first half and we were playing against one of the best defenses in the country," McMackin said.
Ferd Lewis talks to Ron Lee about the turnovers.
"It wasn't just him (Funaki)," said offensive coordinator Ron Lee. "It was a bunch of things."

"I didn't do a good enough job getting the guys ready," Lee said. "They (Boise State) did a good job defending us. They took away the run and we kind of got one dimensional."
Lee said, "It was a combination of things, really. We were not where we were supposed to be, we dropped balls."
Lewis also has a column about it.

Lewis writes about Daniel Libre, who dedicated his first career TD to the injured Kealoha Pilares.
Despite the personal milestone for Libre, who came to UH as a walk-on, "I dedicated it to him (Pilares) because it should have been his (carry)," Libre said. "I told him it was for him."

Libre said, "It sounds like a foot sprain and I know how that is."
Stephen Tsai has a question:
When was the last time the officials, on their own, used replays to determine the line of scrimmage? That would have been OK yesterday, except the officials asked for a review during a UH timeout and after the chains already had been moved. Isn’t that too late?
That was pretty strange.

Here's a wrap-up from Brian Murphy of the Idaho Statesman.

Murphy also writes about the Broncos defense.

Chadd Cripe and Nick Jezierny of the Statesman has some game notes.

Jezierny has a special to the Star-Bulletin.

Jason Chatraw has two specials to the Advertiser, highlighting the play of Kellen Moore and Brandyn Thompson.

Some news and notes from Dave Southorn of the Idaho Press.

I just have to mention it but the QB play yesterday was awful. Funaki's play is erratic at best, he had some good throws but had way more awful ones. How can you miss WR screen passes so bad? Not to mention his terrible decisions to throw into double and triple-coverage.

Alexander didn't look much better in his limited time. I know there wasn't an awful lot of pressure but he was holding onto the rock for a good 5-7 seconds EVERY SNAP. He looked like Ben Roethlisberger with down syndrome in there.

Sorry if I sound like a douche but I'm really frustrated at how we just pissed away the game in the second half. The defense did it's part and all Funaki had to do was take care of the ball, but he unraveled in the second half with inaccurate throws, bad reads, and of course the dumb interceptions. Can't expect the D to continually stop them when they're on the field 80% of the time. Funaki killed the morale on the team, that's how I see it.

I wish Graunke could stay healthy because he's the only QB I trust on this team right now. Funaki is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and the JC QBs just need more time in the system.

I have to agree with double_l. Funakie was absolutely awful. I know Alexander and Rausch dont have the exp yet but all of you folks who wanted to give Funaki his shot... you got it. There's a reason he was beaten out in the spring by 2 JC transfers.

And please don't say its because he was pressured. As a running QB, it shouldve been a lot less pressure than he showed. His throws were terrible and his judgement is just as bad. Sorry for coming off like an Ahole because I'm sure he's a nice guy...but he's not a starting QB.

While Funaki did not do that well, it should be expected for a new QB. Heck Colt Brennan had some rough games last year. So, the hecklers should stop complaining. As for Tyler being the savior, I don't think so. He always throws interceptions too. Funaki is our QB and we should support him. I do agree that he needs lots of improvement, but again that is what happens when a QB takes over with little exerience.

Right now, I think our team is at the cross roads. Win the next 4 games, and UH will have a respectable showing in the WAC, and go to a bowl game. This team is good enough to do it, and should enjoy the benefits of a bowl game. Let us get behind them and support them.

Rolo, please teach Fuanki the look off. Also, more roll outs for Fuanki passing. He does better passing on a roll out.

He's not a new QB. He's been in the system 3 years. And yes Colt and Timmy Chang had bad games... but their good ones outnumbered their bad ones by a lot. Don't compare Funaki to Colt or Timmy...its not close.

He's got experience...maybe not gameday, but he knows this system better than any player and he was the one making the mistakes by overthrowing players, leading them too much causing them to make spectacular catches, and throwing to blue jerseys.

I love the Warriors and am a fan for life but this "new QB" issue is getting on my nerves. Someone mentioned SMU on another board. Take a look at Mitchell. New coach, new offense, and a freshman QB who has just passed for 2000 yards already.
