Game Week: LaTech - Tuesday News

Chawan has a compilation of last night's news from KHON, KFVE, KGMB and KITV. Lots of quotes from yesterday's press conference, highlights from the game, etc.

George Hostetter of the Fresno Bee has some final thoughts on the UH-Fresno game.
Some view it as a mistake-marred (six Fresno State turnovers, a 90-yard Hawaii touchdown kickoff return, a blocked Bulldog field-goal attempt in closing seconds of regulation, two failed field-goal attempts in overtime) fiasco. I view it as an epic, a hard-hitting battle where the mistakes were due mainly to the excellence of the other team.

There can be disappointment in such a state of affairs. But no shame.
Stephen Tsai has some notes about Inoke Funaki retaining the starting QB job, Antwan "Tua" Mahaley on and off the field, and Greg McMackin's request for "clarification" about the officiating.

Brian McInnis has more about the clarification request.

Tsai talks to WAC special teams and defensive players of the week, Dan Kelly and Keao Monteilh.

McInnis has some quotes from Kelly and Monteilh and has some injury news on Rocky Savaiigaea, Fale Laeli and Brashton Satele.
Linebacker Brashton Satele was to have an X-ray done on his shoulder, which he said was separated after the Fresno game.
On the Louisiana Tech side, their top pass-rusher is out for the game.
The News-Star (La.) reported yesterday that Louisiana Tech defensive end Kwame Jordan, considered the Bulldogs' best pass rusher, will miss the Hawaii game with an "unspecified injury."

He leads the team with five tackles for loss and 31/2 sacks.
Jimmy Watson of the Shreveport Times writes how UH's win over Fresno freaked out LaTech coach Derek Dooley.
Dooley probably figured No. 22 Fresno would have its way with a Hawaii team playing without Colt Brennan.

But before Dooley nodded off, an early score, Hawaii 19, Fresno 6, scrolled across the screen. The Warriors would go on to defeat Fresno 32-29 in overtime in Bulldog Stadium.

So much for restful sleep.

“It was ‘here we go again.’ I didn’t sleep well that night,” Dooley said. “But I didn’t watch the game until the next morning.”
Ferd Lewis writes about Dooley's dual role as head coach and AD.
Among the 119 schools that make up the Football Bowl Subdivision, the Bulldogs have the only football coach with dual responsibilities.

This means that, as the Bulldogs prepare for Saturday's game at Hawai'i, Dooley is watching both the Bulldogs' $11 million bottom line and their offense and defensive lines.

It is a balancing act going on seven months and has had its ups and downs. "Well, it depends upon the week," Dooley said. "If we win it is working great. When we don't win, it is not working so good. (But) I say that in jest."
And Dave Reardon writes about Oceanic's customer service issues.
An Oceanic-Time Warner VP said the local cable giant had received close to 100 complaints by yesterday about an outage at the start of the Hawaii football game Saturday. The blank screens resulted in pay-per-view customers missing most of the first quarter of UH's monumental 32-29 upset win at Fresno State.

The cable company (with UH's authorization) was not promising anything yesterday; Oceanic claimed no fault because the outage "was on the Fresno side of the ledger," vice president and operations manager Norman Santos said.

"Our position is we delivered substantially the whole game," Santos added. "We controlled what we could. If we're looking at the end of the game it's a whole different scenario. That would have resonated."

Santos also said a quicker response might be in order if UH had lost the game.

My translation: It would've been harder to try to slip this by fans unhappy with a loss.

Tombo, thank you for linking to the Fresno Bee article--I never realized how many good articles came out of the Fresno Bee--lots of good writers.

As for the Oceanic Cable article, I just want to say what happened to me. I called during the first quarter like probably a lot of UH fans did. The customer service representative kept telling me that it would come on soon when they can correct the problem--corrected maybe about 15 to 20 minutes later. I had asked about a refund if the game is not shown--his response is if the full game is not shown, of course there will be a refund--I am still not happy. I asked about filing a complaint--he said basically that it wouldn't matter since everyone would get the same refund if the game is not shown regardless of whether a complaint is filed or not so no sense in filing a complaint. Next time I will INSIST on filing a complaint since it appears in the article that they seem to be saying ONLY 100 complaints were filed--I believe many others were discouraged to file a complaint.

    Good Stuff Tombo.

I agree about the Fresno Bee. A lot of the turn overs were caused by hard hits or penetration by the defense. Kind of like Colt and GA.

Didn't Oceanic screw-up at the Sugar Bowl too? Did those guys get refunds for the Sugar Bowl?

i agree about the fresno bee writers, especially matt james. nice line about chuck norris and van damme!

sorry to hear about your experience with oceanic, fuzzylogic. even if it wasn't their fault, how they handled it seems a little iffy -- and i would've expected way more than 100 complaints.

kb, wasn't it fox that broadcast the sugar bowl? did oceanic repeat it?

It was unfortunate that I didn't get to watch most of the first quarter because of technical difficulties. I won't blame Oceanic either, I'm just happy I was able to watch the rest of the game when it did come on.

I'm sure they got thousands of complaints just minutes into the game because I couldn't get through at all.

    GO WARRIORS!

Just so everyone understands, I am not blaming Oceanic unless they were deficient in testing the system way before the expected telecast time--I am presuming that they could test the system early to ensure proper showing of what they promised and charged residents for. Things may go wrong, but you would expect that the company would try to minimize errors to ensure happy clients.

As for the 100 complaints, as I understand it, calling Oceanic is not a complaint unless the person actually says he wants to make a complaint and gives his information. Unfortunately, I did talk to someone but did not demand to make a complaint as I just figured everyone was in the same boat and they would do what is right for everyone. Little did I know that only 100 subscribers actually demanded a complaint be filed and thus Oceanic could then say that only 100 complaints were filed when thousands of people called but could not get through, gave up calling or did not technically file a complaint.
