Game Week: Weber St. - Wednesday News
Stephen Tsai writes about Calvin Roberts ascending to #1 right cornerback.
"What I like about him is he worked hard to improve his game," head coach Greg McMackin said. "He does what he's supposed to do. He does what he's coached. He works on getting better every day. He's smart. We've seen him steadily improve. Not only that, he's doing very well in school. He just works hard in doing the right things. You've got to give an opportunity to a guy who's going that way."Tsai also writes about Dustin Blount practicing at #2 right slotback, Aaron Kia practicing at first team left tackle, and has this interesting bit of info about Kealoha Pilares, who practiced at running back:
But McMackin said Pilares eventually will be featured as a hybrid runner-receiver in a special offensive scheme.Jason Kaneshiro profiles Inoke Funaki.
"We were going to get to that package," McMackin said. "We're going to get to it a little earlier (than scheduled)."
"I think his personality is his greatest asset," quarterbacks coach Nick Rolovich said. "He's as good a teammate as I've ever been around and I would have loved for him to be my teammate when I played.Jaymes Song of the AP has an article about Funaki getting the start.
"You never see him real high or low, he's pretty level-headed. When you tell him something and you look him in the eye you can see him processing what you're saying."
"It's nice to be here at home and play for a lot of people I know and play for family and represent a state that raised me," he said. "It's exciting."Kaneshiro talks to coach Alex Gerke about his past with Weber State.
Gerke's familiarity with the Wildcats figures to give the Warriors a bit of a head start on this week's scouting report. And Kaneshiro has some news and notes about Calvin Roberts, Greg Salas practicing with a cast, Weber State's Hawaii ties, etc.
"It's just like any coach, you're going to watch the film, see what they do," Gerke said. "I understand the personnel a little bit because I coached a lot of those guys up front offensively and went against that defense every day in practice for 21/2 years."
