Game Week: Weber State - Monday News

Stephen Tsai talks to the coaches about Inoke Funaki being named the starting quarterback.
"He moved the team," offensive coordinator Ron Lee said. "He showed good leadership. He scrambled around and made some plays. That's what we need — somebody to make plays. He made plays pretty much single-handedly. He showed the game wasn't too big for him."
"I was really happy the way he competed," McMackin said. "Here's a guy who's been in the program for a while, but didn't complain or gripe. We went with the two other quarterbacks over him because they had stronger arms, basically, and a little more height.

"All (Funaki) did was be a team member. ... It's the perfect example of a guy finding his role, supporting the other guys, being a team player and then, when he gets his opportunity, making the most of it. That's what playing and coaching is all about."
Here's an article about Funaki from Jason Kaneshiro.
"I was proud of him because the other two guys got the opportunity and he was a team player and tried to find a role on the team and tried to help the other quarterbacks," McMackin said.

Graunke was reinstated to the team last week, and "we're obviously going to try to get a look at him, but he's way behind right now," McMackin said after Saturday's game.
Dave Reardon has a Warrior Replay, breaking down five key plays from the Florida game.

Kaneshiro writes about the Warriors learning lessons from the Florida game and regrouping to face Weber State.
"We came in with confidence ... unfortunately we came up short and it's very disappointing," senior receiver Mike Washington said after the game. "I took it to heart, but we have to get ready to move on to the next game. It's definitely got me fired up. Big time."
Dave Reardon has a column about the importance of not looking past Weber State.
By the way, anyone caught uttering the words "Oregon State Beavers" this week should be sentenced to grass drills at high noon.

We will learn much more about the Warriors from this game than from the slaughter in Gainesville two days ago, especially about their resilience.

Senior linebacker and captain Adam Leonard said some players held their heads a little too low Saturday afternoon in The Swamp for his taste. But most know it isn't the end of the world.
And Ferd Lewis writes about the leadership of Adam Leonard.
So many players who want to be leaders try to do it with words. Leonard, a senior, does it with action, which is why he commands respect and was made a captain.

So when Leonard stood before his teammates in the locker room beneath Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in the aftermath of the 56-10 loss to the Gators with some heartfelt words, people paid attention.

When he pointedly told them "this (Florida) game does not define us," you figure there was a pretty good chance the message was received loud and clear. We know this because of the number of other players who dutifully — and, hopefully, sincerely — repeated them afterward.

I think it's a little weird that the 4th string QB (he really was 4th, behind the Graunke and the 2 JCs) is now suddenly the starting QB after working against the Florida backups. Graunke scored in the Sugar Bowl against the Georgia backups but no one would say that he deserved to start ahead of Brennan. It makes me wonder if the offensive powers that be are really sure of what they're doing. No team has consistently won while juggling QBs so much.

Don't get me wrong. I bleed UH green and hope Funaki does well and that they spank Weber State's okole, but I'm a little worried.

it has been kinda strange, having three starting QBs one game into the season. but the coaches know what they're doing. maybe game experience and time in the system has been underestimated a bit. plus, even if it's been in mop-up, funaki has always performed well in games. he has a ton of experience, the confidence of his teammates, and he's just a playmaker. i think it's a great decision.

Inoke's play reflected his experience and maturity in the gator game, and he gives us the best chance to win not only against weber but on the road against OSU (who had a hard time containing a stanford qb that's not as mobile as Inoke).

Others I hope to see more of...

Javonte Taylor WR...made plays with his speed (and didn't drop anything).

Jason Rego...ran hard and without fear.

Kealoha Pilares...not enough touches for this playmaker. I'm hoping to see him back at running back if Libre isn't ready to go.

We missed Blaze Soares...but I would save him for OSU.

Good point by franksabunch. But since we don't have Brennan after the Sugar Bowl, I would have said Graunke did deserve to be the starting QB (based upon the QBs available at that time--before the JC transfers). Now that would be predicated on Tyler being able to practice and doing well--both on the practice field and in school.

    1. I think Graunke would have been the starter if he maintained his status quo. Graunke had the most experience and deserved his shot. But supposedly academics took out this "starter."

    2. Rausch may have been the first anointed one since Graunke was now not available but then "injured" his arm the week before the game. So the second "starter" is out.

    3. Alexander was supposedly the third "starter" but either not fully prepared or the Florida defense was too good.

    4. Inoke was the only one that really did anything. Makes sense that he should start and then let the three other starters catch up. At least he had Division 1 experience (although limited) and he knew the system.

I am glad that I am not a coach, I would have been changing QB's at will! We may have played everyone at QB--someone may have done well--which turned out to be Inoke.

    thanks warriorx!

BIW, would definitely like to see more of rego and j.taylor. reardon just reported that pilares is moving to running back this week with libre out.

great observations mr. logic. i was frustrated graunke didn't take care of business in the offseason, especially when i was watching the game. anyway, i'm sure rausch's and even alexander's injuries threw in variables that made the coaches decision that much harder. hopefully inoke can come out on saturday and light it up in the air and on the ground.

I'm happy that Funaki gets his chance. I really like him, but he does not have the accurate long ball threat. However, if they make a rolling pocket, he will be very effective. Funaki is good at the short stuff. Where the JC guys are hurt, shouldn't the healthy QB get the ball? As for Graunke, he let himself, the team, and the fans down by not taking care of business. Quite frankly, he has so much ground to catch up with the team that I would be surprised to see him until mid season. That being said, its a long season and we need him too, even though he throws as many ints as tds.
