About Those Tickets

Dan Nakaso has details about the sold out allotment:
Warriors supporters would have had a better shot at getting Sugar Bowl tickets had UH officials accepted the school's full allotment of 17,500 seats. UH officials, concerned they would not be able to sell the full allotment, received permission from the Sugar Bowl and Western Athletic Conference to reduce the number to 13,500.

WAC Commissioner Karl Benson said last night that Sugar Bowl officials contacted him and UH officials before Saturday night's game against Washington asking if Hawai'i would give up 5,000 of its tickets to LSU if LSU ended up going to the Sugar Bowl "knowing that the LSU demand would be greater."

"Hawai'i was faced with making a decision, trying to estimate what their local demand might be and trying to accommodate the Sugar Bowl's request and made a decision that 12,500 tickets might be enough to satisfy the Hawai'i fan base," Benson said.
In the face of actual demand from UH fans, WAC officials are now asking the Sugar Bowl for extra tickets for Hawai'i, Benson said.

But UH officials have been told that the game is sold out, said UH associate athletic director John McNamara. "We just said, 'Call us if any more tickets become available,' " he said.
Talk about lack of faith in the fan base. Couldn't they have waited until after sales to the general public to give back any tickets? The article has a lot more details about this, as well as fans' reactions, and the various ways fans are finding ways to New Orleans, with or without tickets.

Here's more about the hoops fans are jumping through to get there, from Rosemarie Bernardo.
Some University of Hawaii football fans are willing to endure multiple stopovers and long layovers to support the Warriors in New Orleans when they play the University of Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl.

But they say it's worth it.

For the past couple of days, fans scrambled to find the best package deal on the Internet.

For Carter Siu, 33, his flight from Honolulu to New Orleans includes three different carriers, three stopovers, a seven-hour layover and an hourlong shuttle.
Just unbelievable. It's great to hear about the fans' dedication to support the Warriors. Just hope they all find ways to attend the game.

And about the yet to be announced Heisman invitation for Colt Brennan, here's an article from Stephen Tsai:
Brennan said that if he were indeed a finalist, he would go to New York as an ambassador.

"I don't represent myself," Brennan said. "I represent my team, my teammates, the University of Hawai'i and the state. This will be a good opportunity for all of us."
Dave Reardon has a story about it as well, along with final regular season statistics. He also talks to El Paso Times writer and AP voter Bret Bloomquist, who ranked UH at #1 in his final regular season poll.
Bloomquist gave Hawaii its first No. 1 vote ever in the AP poll. He said he plans to put the 10th-ranked Warriors in the top spot again in the final poll after it plays fourth-ranked Georgia (10-2) in the Sugar Bowl.

"I expect Hawaii to win," he said. "I think they could beat Ohio State. I think they can line up with anyone in the country. Their offense can score against anyone, and you win with quarterbacks."

Bloomquist said he didn't have UH very high in his rankings early in the season but, "once teams stared losing, I moved them up quickly."
And finally, Ferd Lewis writes about the bonuses coach June Jones and AD Herman Frazier are in line for.

I can't stand it knowing that Frazier is going to get a bonus for screwing up his job. Jones deserves everything he gets. The assistant coaches deserve to get Frazier's share. What did Frazier do to deserve a bonus for bad facilities, screwed up schedule, possibly giving tickets back to the Sugar Bowl. Sad state of affairs for the University of Hawaii Administration to reward inefficiencies such as Frazier!

Not the smartest part there, they should have done this in reverse and take the tickets and if some were left over then give them to Georgia. For this type of possibly once in a lifetime or once every 10 year game he should know the demand would be high. When I was going to Univ of Utah I went to the Fiesta Bowl in 2004 and there were over 53,000 fans and that was more then the stadium in Utah held. I know this is different because of travel, but I would have taken more tickets then less.

Like many fans I was left holding the bag (empty of tickets) on tuesday afternoon. I even had a letter from UH Athletics authorizing my purchase up to Thursday. I read where a back room deal was already in the works on Saturday where Benson, Frazier, et al were in agreement for UH to give LSU 5000 of UH's allotment; whoops it's Sunday on ESPN so it is Georgia; they get 4000 UH tickets. Anyone in UH Athletics angling for a WAC job? Upper tier AD job? 3000 tickets went to UH for athletics and Admin. Lets see, give each player 4 because they deserve it; give the coaches 4 each because they deserve it; give the football program 300 for recruiting and comps because the football program deserves it. So 2000 goes to UH Admin? Do administrators pay for their tickets or is this a public gift of funds? I doubt that comp tickets are in the individual admin contracts. 4000 gifted + 2000 gifted. Reality check now says we lost out on 6000 tickets!!
As a UH Fan and as a former UH Football player I say some heads should roll over this blatant disregard for the fans.
Are the sportswriters/newscasters going to call this as it is or are they also UH Admin players?

don, thanks for sharing your story. just unreal. today's article just makes me even madder as they try to cover their butts and say, oh but this kind of horse trading happens all the time. or mcnamara in yesterday's kgmb news, basically saying we'll be more prepared for our next BCS bowl. are you frickin kidding me? they just can't admit that they're out of touch with their fan base and they screwed up.

http://www.sportsline.com/collegefootball/story/10514878 Hey so many Hawaii fans living on the mainland, was reading blogs on people at the Advertiser article, the other sports sites and the story above is saying, it's our faults, sure is......UH with all that $ coming in could've covered the tickets. Nice to know that we have a lot of fanbase out there, 2 bad no tickets, My husband posted a blog w/ the cost of tickets, $500 prime $350 med $175 nosebleed tickets. Cannot compare this to the Holiday Bowl sorry, different time different game. I know we can get tickets but going cost more and Hawaii fans want to sit with Hawaii fans regardless of where they live on the mainland. This is so typical, Frazier not akamai but pupule. GO WARRIORS!
