Say It Ain't So

As posted by BigWave from Sportshawaii.com, here's an article by Matt Schuman from the Greeley Tribune in Northern Colorado.
The University of Northern Colorado football team will head to play the University of Hawaii in Honolulu for its season opener on Sept. 1.

Players were told at the end of practice on Tuesday and came off the field and into Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion shouting "we are going to Hawaii" and talking among each other about the trip. Neither UNC nor the University of Hawaii have made an official announcement.

UNC athletic director Jay Hinrichs could not be reached for comment.

University of Northern Colorado defensive lineman Joe Silipo has never been to Hawaii, but he is excited to go. He's even planning to get a Hawaiian shirt for the occasion.
And there's your second I-AA team.

UPDATE: Looking back at my yet to be completed "The Saga of the '07 Schedule" post, I find that it's fun to reminisce back to November.
"It will fall into place," Frazier said.

He said he is in contact with schools that want to play Hawaii, but did not disclose the names. He did say Louisville called him last week to schedule a 2007 game, but Frazier declined because it would be at Louisville.

"If I'm going to do that, I might as well play at Georgia," Frazier said.

He said he wants to schedule a "marquee" team. When asked to define "marquee," Frazier said "top 20."

Frazier said his plan is to schedule a "big-time anchor on the back end," meaning Thanksgiving weekend or the first week of December (most likely at home), then a "decent team on the front end," and a I-AA team.
Ah, memories.

UPDATE 2: Here's confirmation, though it's not totally completely official, from Stephen Tsai.
A UNC spokesman said he could not issue a comment, but he said today's story in the Greeley Tribune newspaper was accurate. Here's the link:
http://www.greeleytrib.com/article/20070404/SPORTS/104040111
The spokesman indicated it was up to the UH athletic director to sign off on the arrangement. But the spokesman said UNC was sure of the game that the head coach announced it to the players at the end of yesterday's practice. The players, the spokesman said, were extremely enthusiastic.
But a UH defensive back, told of the game, said: "I don't know who (Northern Colorado) is. I wish we could have had a better schedule.
Is Herman waiting on something? Eh? Maybe there's hope. Ehe?
