Glanville on Ikaika / Tim Grasso
Jerry Glanville has high praise for his former pupil, Ikaika Alama-Francis.
"He's a special person and a special player," Glanville said in a telephone interview from Portland Thursday. "He's all-out hustle and all-out effort. And Jody Genessy of Deseret Morning News has a profile of punter Tim Grasso, who will be joining UH in the fall.
"Everything he does is just the way you want it."
The Lions' coaching staff will get its first look at Alama-Francis as a pro today, with the first two practices in a three-day mini-camp for rookies. There are double sessions today and Saturday and one Sunday morning. Workouts will be without pads.
After getting beat out at the receiver position as a freshman at Dixie State, coaches found out he could also punt. The interesting part about that — while he was a three-sport standout at Davis, soccer wasn't among his sports, as one might assume due to his kicking abilities. He can just naturally flat-out boot the ball. He also credits coaches David Leo and Shawn Johnson for helping him out.Fake punts, eh? Well, he sounds like an athlete who could pull them off. And he can put in some licks on returns, a la Dan Kelly!

And he does his punting part exceptionally well. Over two junior college football seasons, Grasso averaged 41.6 yards on 91 punts. He also caught the attention of Hawaii coaches with two fake punts he executed using his athleticism. On one, he threw a pass. He ran for a 20-yard gain on the other.
"I was an athlete first, then I became a kicker," Grasso said. "They (Hawaii coaches) like the duo combination on that."
Other bonuses include his tendencies to not shank punts and to be consistent. That helped him secure the starting punting position, which he was assured by his coach this past week.
