BYU Leaving MWC
But not for the WAC.
Brigham Young University will leave the Mountain West Conference for the 2011-12 season, become independent in football and join the West Coast Conference in all other sports, notably men's basketball, a source with direct knowledge of the situation told ESPN.com.What a bummer. Thanks again Reno and Fresno.
BYU and the WCC will make a combined announcement later Tuesday.
BYU had originally agreed to go to the Western Athletic Conference in all sports and go independent in football before the MWC squelched the move by inviting WAC members Fresno State and Nevada two weeks ago.

Brigham Young abandoning the WAC is now all the more reason for Hawaii to go independent. UH can have 9 home games and 3 away games each year ... or at least 8 and 4. Hawaii should get exemptions from the NCAA for extra games, given its geographic remoteness.

As for other sports, Hawaii can also be independent ... with a heavy slate of home games and fewer road games. And, when the 'Bows do take road trips in v'ball, hoops, baseball, etc., they can play 4 or 5 games in a row on the mainland before returning to the islands.
