WitP: Stutz, Colt, Bess
Former UH receiver and grad assistant Craig Stutzmann will coach at Memphis this season.
Stutzmann, a Saint Louis graduate, joins a staff headed by first-year coach Larry Porter. His official duties will be ironed out upon his arrival in Memphis, Tenn., but he will assist offensive coordinator and receivers coach Eric Price, son of UTEP head coach Mike Price.Jason Reid of the Washington Post writes that Jim Zorn wanted to cut Colt Brennan before the start of the 2009 season.
But Zorn expected Brennan to challenge Todd Collins for the backup job in the 2009 preseason, and that didn't happen because Brennan struggled. Also, some in the organization grew frustrated with Brennan because of what they perceived to be his cockiness despite never having accomplished anything in the NFL, team sources said. And finally, Hawaii News Now interviewed Davone Bess last week.
Brennan, a popular player, hurt his left hip during the final preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the team decided to put him on the season-ending injured-reserved list and he underwent surgery. In addition to his left hip damage, Brennan had surgery on his right hip before his rookie year.
Just to be clear, I'm not saying the Redskins definitely would have released Brennan if he had been healthy or that he lacks potential. And I don't know what Coach Mike Shanahan thinks of Brennan, though I plan to ask him this morning during his media availability at the combine.

here's what he said (not much):
Before last season, Zorn was not high on Colt Brennan, whom the team considered releasing before he went on the season-ending injured-reserve list, according to sources familiar with the situation. Brennan, however, possesses the type of swagger/cockiness Shanahan likes in his quarterbacks. Shanahan would not comment on whether the team plans to select a quarterback with the No. 4 overall pick.
"I haven't had a chance to see anybody except Jason play, except for a couple of preseason games," Shanahan said. "Obviously, we'll have to go through a couple of minicamps and see how people fit into the system. We're going to play the best players."

so shanahan watched a couple preseason games...hopefully they were not from the most recent preseason when colt did not do too well. If he was watching the hall of fame game from 2 years ago then shanahan might have a good impression of colt.
