Warriors in the Pros: Colt Brennan

Washington Post blogger Jason La Canfora writes about Colt Brennan possibly getting a chance to back up Jason Campbell this season.
Position Battle: Backup QB

Why do I have the feeling this battle might inflame more fan passion than any other? Well, perhaps it was because Colt Brennan may have generated more buzz than any player in the NFL who never came close to getting a snap last year.

The rookie, inactive as the emergency third QB all of last season, flashed a few things in preseason and by August the cries from fans for him to unseat not only backup Todd Collins, but starter Jason Campbell as well, made for one of the summer's most interesting sideshows. To me, rushing Brennan in any manner made no sense then and still doesn't, but he will certainly get more time to show his stuff in preseason games this summer and could push Collins.
Brennan should get more of a shot to work with NFL-caliber players, but that also means he will be working against legitimate defensive players, and that's where some of his shortcomings could be exposed. He may not have the mechanics of a prototypical NFL quarterback, but he has plenty of moxie and playmaking instincts that might carry him at this level.

Some of these writers make me crazy... It's like they like seeing a clogged kitchen disposal keep stirring the water around without ever draining.

(set John Lennon music ON) "All we are say - ing... is give Colt a chance..."

And, by the way... the loudest Colt supporters who wanted him to play hopscotch to starter were longtime east coast Redskins fans. Most of the Hawaii folks, myself included, wanted to see Colt move up the ranks with time to learn the system, heal old wounds and bulk up a bit first.

    This year is different though.
    GO COLT!
    HAIL!

    Hi Tombo and LK,

I have a problem with one part this article/blog. It may sound like he knows about a "weakness" with Colt especially when he says "he will be working against legitimate defensive players and that's where some of his shortcoings could be exposed." I would like to think that on Colt's side, he will have legitimate offensive players to protect him and that can also catch his passes. To me, they would tend to offset each other with legitimate NFL players on each side. If he is only picking on Colt's mechanics or height, I am sure Colt will do as well as he always has.

Anyway, always great to have access to more articles about future, current and WitPs. Thank you Tombo.

i think that line was to address what some of the critics were saying last preseason -- that colt was doing so well because he was playing against "future UPS drivers" or whatever. just hope colt gets a chance.

Colt definitely needs time to develop a bit more. The last thing I'd want to see is him get in there too soon and look completely overmatched which could do massive damage to his perception. I tend to agree to a certain point fuzzylogic had in that he'll also have better players around him which in some respects, should balance out the "better" defenses. The big concern would be the speed of the game which is drastically different.

The greatest quarterbacks in history never had the great arm with the huge size and the best speed. The one thing that separated the great ones from the rest is the ability to read defenses plain and simple. The greats can pick apart defenses with the passing game because of the reads. That I know is what Colt brings to the table. I get irked when draft day happens because everyone wants the QB with the big arm, the fastest runner with the huge size. What often gets overlooked is the smarts. (Jamarcus Russell I'm talking to you) I know you can never measure smarts when it comes to reading defenses but I know if they did, Colt would be ahead of most categories. The Redskins are sadly mistaken if they think Campbell is the answer. The cry last year was that the O-line got beat up in the second half. Just give Colt 2 seconds every snap and you will be just fine. You don't need the best line, just a line that can give him a little time and he would kill the other team. Zorn be smart and save your job this year. Use the smarter QB not the most physically blessed QB.
