David Graves Commits to UH

Stephen Tsai writes that quarterback David Graves will become a Warrior.
Folsom (Calif.) High’s David Graves, who had the nation’s highest passing-efficiency rating, has accepted a football scholarship from the University of Hawai‘i.
Graves, who completed 72 percent of his passes and threw for 40 touchdowns, said he chose UH because of the offense, the coaches and “Hawai‘i’s music. I love the music of the islands. I love the bending guitars and the real soothing voices.”
Not only is Graves an accomplished football player — he was named the Sacramento Bee’s Metro Football Player of the Year — he also is a member of Folsom’s top-ranked jazz band.
Graves also rushed for 11 touchdowns and nearly 700 yards.
Congrats to David!

Also, all the best to UH athletic director Jim Donovan as he undergoes a procedure for kidney stones.

UPDATE: Graves was profiled by the Sacramento Bee after being named Player of the Year.
Richardson was Graves' second-grade teacher in Folsom. Even then, the coach could sense a competitive fire within the youngster. Graves didn't just want to beat the other kids in a sprint across the playground. He had to beat them.

And this season, Richardson had to remind Graves it was actually OK as a quarterback to duck out of bounds, that he doesn't have to go Walter Payton on every linebacker and duck his head into defenders to grind out an extra yard.
And here are two highlight films:

This is good news. Not a big QB (6'1" 195 lbs)but enough size and mobility to hopefully be a QB we can mold into a 2-3 year starter.

This is definitely good. The offense those videos show him running looks very similar to the shotgun multiple wide packages that UH runs. No wonder the offense we run was a factor for him.

His arm strength looks okay, and the running ability is nice. Couple of nifty moves on some of the runs. Seems pretty decisive on tucking and running on non-designed runs.

Something worrisome on the film is how many of those throws are really high, laying out his receivers (especially since this is a highlight reel). The worst one is at like 5:27 on the first video - wide open flat pass after drifting left and he makes the guy leap to grab it. The crossing pattern at around 1:32 on the second video is pretty bad too. No pressure, good plant and throw, but goes very high and breaks the receiver's stride. With a nicer throw, that's a touchdown behind the coverage.

I like how they show him on designed rollouts on maybe one sixth of the plays. That's something the UH coaches could use to help the offensive line in the future.

Overall, this guy looks like a very good pickup for Hawaii. The raw material is there for him to be fighting for a starting job in a few years.

sup morgado. representin in the district! sorry if this is the wrong morgado.

think david's highlight films look pretty good. though i do agree some of the throws were a little high, that's definitely correctable and he showed a lot of ability in the other plays. kinda reminds me of corey nielsen's highlights, haha. hmmm, david, corey and cayman shutter coming in with the '09 class. i'm thinking at least one of them will grayshirt and the other two will redshirt, especially with alexander and rausch coming back. but who knows. also got steele jantz, bryce k, and shane austin too. will be interesting to see how it all shapes up in spring and fall camps.

this dude better be over 5'-11". too many undersized players...they may have had speed for the past recruites, but going up against teams like florida in 08' and georgia (sugar bowl)...no offense, but shear size and brute strength was what allowed the other teams to stomp UH. the O-line had no chance what so ever to protect the QB. Hawaii really needs to recruit the heavy hitters...6'-3" and above, with weights of 210 lbs. and higher. one of many key ingredient if UH wants to play with the BCS bound teams.

Hey Tombo, i'm not in DC anymore! Back in Hawaii actually... working at UH. The QB competition will be interesting this year since the coaching staff has basically shown us there is no such thing as a #1 starter anymore on this team at any point in the season.
