Mouton started the first seven games at cornerback before being shifted to offense, where he started at slotback the last two to give the Warriors another weapon. But with New Mexico State and quarterback Chase Holbrook up next, the staff decided to shift Mouton back to defense. McMackin said Mouton could still play a limited role on offense.Ferd Lewis has news and notes about Mouton, Josh Rice flying up to replace an injured Mana Silva, Keao Monteilh and Desmond Thomas battling at the free safety spot, and Kealoha Pilares tweaking his ankle.
There was concern yesterday about the condition of running back/slotback Kealoha Pilares, who "tweaked" his ailing right foot late in practice.Ferd Lewis takes a look at the outstanding play of David Veikune.
Pilares has been out of the last two games since spraining the foot at Boise State. He looked good until late in the session yesterday when he said he felt a twinge after making a cut. He hobbled off the field and sat out the remainder of practice with an ice bag.
"Hopefully, it'll be OK," Pilares said.
Rarely has Veikune disappointed because rarely is he in the wrong place. It happens so infrequently that coaches are loathe to bring it up as if either they don't quite believe it themselves or the preponderance of his outstanding plays so outweighs the questionable ones. Usually, Veikune is in the middle of the play, which is why he leads the Warriors in tackles for loss (10.5), sacks (4.5) and is second only to linebacker Solomon Elimimian in tackles (55).And finally, former UH offensive lineman Bernard Carvalho Jr. was elected mayor of Kauai.
