The Chad Owens Show / Withy-Allen / Workouts

Chad Owens went crazy last night, catching 10 passes for 132 yards and 4 TDs, and returning 10 kicks for 228 yards and another TD for the Colorado Crush in a loss. Here's the game stats, and below are some video highlights. Check out that mohawk!

UPDATE: Nathan Boudreaux of ArenaFootball.com praises Owens in this column:
I think I said it in one of my columns a few weeks ago (and I’ll say it again) - Colorado rookie WR/KR Chad Owens is the real deal. Owens is only 5-foot-8 and 180 pounds, but his skill-set is perfect for the indoor game. He’s as quick as they come. He’s a solid route runner. And he has pretty good hands – as evident by his pair of one-handed TD catches against New York on Monday night. Owens is simply a play-maker (10 catches for 132 yards and four TDs as a receiver and 10 returns for 228 yards, including a 56-yard kickoff return for a score vs. the Dragons) and single-handedly kept the Crush in the game before eventually falling, 73-65. Since joining the club a little over a month ago, Owens has 61 catches for 626 yards and eight TDs as a receiver to go along with 40 kick returns for 822 yards (20.6 avg.) and a score.

In other arena football news, Shawn Withy-Allen will come out of retirement to rejoin the AIFA's Fayetteville Guard.
The Guard went 12-0 last season with Withy-Allen at quarterback and won the Indoor Football Championship. But with a rewarding new job with a church-sponsored youth program and planning to get married, Withy-Allen decided to hang up his cleats with the Guard after 2007.

However, with Fayetteville struggling at 3-7 and having lost three straight games, Withy-Allen has decided to come back to help his old team.

Stephen Tsai catches up with UH players participating in offseason workouts.
"The newcomers are asking questions, and the veterans are giving good advice, and letting them know the offense," Graunke said. "Everybody is getting a pretty good idea of what's going on out here."

Funaki said: "We help each other because we're one team. And somebody has to be ready if somebody goes down with an injury. It's nice to have everybody familiar with the offense."
And Brian McInnis talks to receiver Mike Tinoco about learning the offense.
"I'm kind of used to that offensive style," he said. "It's just different route-running. At JC, if you had a route, that's all you could do. There was a couple times you would switch it up, but here, you got options all over the place. It's good -- it really makes you read the defense. (Improvisation) is good, I like that."

Thanks Tombo. Even though I saw the highlight reel last night for the Colorado Crush, I wanted to see it again, and again. I hope the NFL sees this and CO gets another shot at the NFL. Maybe this time, he can relax and do his thing. We know he can play.

Something has to give and I think Timmmy may not be in Hamilton much longer. There were talks earlier in the year about trading him. In the last several weeks Hamilton has signed two more quarterbacks ("pivot" in Canada) and they now have 5 quarterbacks.

HAMILTON - The Hamilton Tiger-Cats bolstered their quarterback core Tuesday with the signing of former Florida Gators pivot Chris Leak.

The six-foot, 207-pounder from Charlotte, N.C., had a 94.8 rating in his last season with the Gators in 2006, when he threw for 2,942 yards and 23 touchdowns.

The CFL team now has five quarterbacks in camp, including starter Casey Printers, backup Richie Williams, sophomore Timmy Chang and newcomer Quinton Porter.

Good to hear on the news with Robert Kekaula that CO got his confidence back. CO should be playing in the NFL. By the way, I like the Mohawk. I still remember CO tearing up BYU on kick returns, and shouting at BYU. I hope we put them back on our schedule.

I hope Ken Peters is wrong--he is the main sports writer covering the CFL for the Hamilton Spectator. Hope Timmy does well or gets to move on to a better team. Would be great if Timmy and Chad Owens could play together.

    Timmy's time is over

Timmy Chang put on a brave face Tuesday but he must know it's over.
The decision of new Ticat GM Bob O'Billovich to sign heralded former Florida Gator QB Chris Leak certainly signals that Chang's time with the Ticats is just about over.

Chang told me Leek is a great QB but he just plans to control what he can control. Ya-da Ya-da Ya-da. Chang's next insightful interview will be his first.

Obie has sent out previous signals that he didn't think Chang could do it, even publicly dangling him as trade bait to Winnipeg.
Now with Leek in the lair, Obie has the perfect opportunity to let Chang go. Remember it was previous GM Marcel Desjardins who brought Chang in. And to be fair, Chang has played terrible.

Even in this current training camp Chang has struggled. Too many of his passes either hang up like ducks or are picked off.

If Leak can show anything of his previous Florida form he will be the Cats new number three. Leek put up incredible stats at Florida in leading the Gators to the BCS national championship over Ohio State. The only reason the Cats didn't cut Chang outright is probably due to the fact Leek hasn't played in almost a year and the Cats want to make extra sure he hasn't totally lost his ability.
But the fact Obie brought him in when he did indicates to me that the Cats feel Chang is done after seeing him struggle early in camp.

Indeed Obie told a reporter at Cat practice Tuesday that Leek won't be competing for the number one or number two jobs. That makes him competing for the number three job currently held by Chang.

The Cats should have done Chang a favor and released him to give him a chance to catch on with another team. By keeping him it just seems to prolong the inevitable. And I'd say the chances are slim that the Cats play Chang in preseason action.

For better or for worse, Timmy's time with the Ticats is over.
Is it premature? Maybe. But I think Leek can do no worse than Chang and may even blossom.
I'm interested in your views on this.
    Ken

One final note on this. I don't think Charlie Taaffe had any part of this. Taaffe had always appeared to be a Chang backer. But more than that, Taaffe is loath to begin another revolving door in training camp. But the door has already started to spin, hasn't it?

Chang, a former University of Hawaii passer who struggled with the Cats last season, is currently third on the depth chart.

But Chang was noncommittal when asked about the arrival of the latest competition for a Cat QB job.

"He is a great quarterback. More importantly he is a good person too," he said.

Chang said he doesn't feel more vulnerable with Leak in camp.

"I just have to go out there and execute and do what I can control. Let's just go out there practice hard and get into the playbook," he said.
