Sugar Bowl Preview, Colt, Etc.
Here's a pretty cool montage previewing the Sugar Bowl, from a Georgia fan:
Dramatic!
CBS Sportsline's Dennis Dodd ranks the bowl games, with the Sugar Bowl at #1.
Dramatic!
CBS Sportsline's Dennis Dodd ranks the bowl games, with the Sugar Bowl at #1.
Both teams have offensive stars (Hawaii's Colt Brennan; Georgia's Knowshon Moreno). Hawaii has the nation's longest winning streak (13). Georgia is fourth (six).Mayor Mufi Hannemann copies Linda Lingle's pineapple bet.
This game strikes to the heart of SEC pride. Mark Richt's salary is bigger than the entire Hawaii football budget ($2.2 million). Hawaii hasn't played a team this big, this physical, but that chip on its shoulder might make up the difference. Georgia hasn't faced a passing offense this prolific.
Upset alert: Any stray cheerleaders after the game are likely to get a proposal from someone.
Athens-Clarke Mayor Heidi Davison and Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann have a friendly wager over the Jan. 1 Bowl Championship Series game in New Orleans, and if Davison loses, it'll be the pits.Pete Schrager of FoxSports.com thinks Colt Brennan is cool.
A member of Hannemann's staff called Davison last week to set up the bet.
"He said, 'How about some pineapples for some peaches?' " Davison said Monday. "I said, 'OK, I can do that.' "
Everyone knows Brennan's career accomplishments. The single-season Division I-A passing touchdown record; the career Division I-A passing touchdown record; 23 other Division 1-A records; an undefeated season, etc. That's all good and well. Is Brennan an NFL quarterback, though? And Lyell Marks praises Brennan on The Bleacher Report.
I think so. Having watched several Hawaii games over the past three seasons, I've become absolutely enamored with the way he throws a football. It's unlike most other quarterbacks I've seen. The release it most resembles is Kerry Collins' motion, and even that is a stretch.
The scouts and NFL writers are going to pick apart his throwing style come February. That's almost as definite as taxes, death, and another Lindsay Lohan meltdown. But that shouldn't deter teams from going with the guy. Most draft pundits I've spoken to have Brennan listed as a late second-, early third-round draft pick.
Personally, with the absolute dearth of quality QB's in the league — as made evident in an NFL week where Brock Berlin, Chris Redman, and two McCown brothers started games — I can't see him slipping out of the first round. Brennan has a fantastic touch and one of the quicker releases you'll see.
Brennan led that comeback against San Jose State, and defeated Mother Nature in the process. Against Washington, he rallied the troops when it mattered most. He got his teammates to the Sugar Bowl—where they deserve to be.
No team has beaten the Warriors this year. Soft schedule or not, that garners recognition.
So the next time you call Hawaii a joke, or dismiss the Warriors as overmatched, understand that you're sending a personal message to that kid Brennan.
And the next time you decide that the game is over because Hawaii is down by 21 points, consider the Joe Montana-like poise that Brennan has shown all year.

This is a good football team, but not anywhere close to a great team. Only in the greatest year of college football parity would this team ever be even remotely considered the National Champion. Look at their schedule. They haven't played any team of any caliber, yet. Can they get up for one game? Let's hope so, or Georgia will walk all over them.

Put the "weak schedule" baby to rest now...he's getting very, very, very tired. I'll sing you a lullaby "BCS, BCS, BCS."
Thank you UH for giving me an unbelieveably fun, heart throbbing, squeeze da okole season!! What a blast!!! Everyone can say what they want to but the bottom line is we are the WAC champions, our quarterback was a Heismann finalist, and I've witnessed the UH team rallying together to pull out some incredible wins. You are a GREAT team!!

Getrealyoulosers...
Are you serious what you are saying!
The Hawaii Warriors are a GREAT TEAM!
They are 12-0
UNDEFEATED!
Hawaii beat the same Washington Huskies who beat Cal. This is the same Cal team ranked #12 during this game who beat a ranked #15 Tennessee 45-31.
This same Tennessee team who was unranked at the time went up against then #12 Georgia and beat them 35-14, stopping the so called Georgia offense to only 14 points...and Moreno put up just over 40 yrds!
Yeah....some Caliber of a SMASH OFFENSE HUH....LOL....DUH!
So Hawaii haven't played any team with Caliber huh....
Oh yeah...Washington beat Cal 37-23, the very same team that Hawaii beat who put up an impressive come from behind win 35-28 with seconds to go!
I guess you just answered for Georgia...
It comes down to the game...stop acting like a 4 year old and let the Warriors and Dogs lay it down on the field!
We will see come game time!
SEC on this, wah, wah, wah.....
Go Broncos!
Go Warriors!
Go WAC!

The Georgia Bulldogs are 10 point favorites to win the BCS Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day. They are the hottest team in the country over the last 6 weeks of the season, and if all things were equal and the football Gods had a choice, they would put Georgia and USC in the BCS National Championship game as the 2 best teams in college football. But the BCS doesn't work that way so they are stuck with OSU and LSU (who both have longer losing streaks than ND). If it wasn't for the fact that it was for the National Championship, the Hawaii-Georgia game would be the most compelling game to watch.
Most important questions regarding the Sugar Bowl:
Can Hawaii stop the Georgia's run offense?
Hershall Walker says UGA just needs to run 2 TE, power I formation and run the football and will be able to do so like butter. What is he smoking? Anyway, in asnwer to the question, I belive it is No. THey will not be able to stop the UGA running game. They will probably be slower through the first quart and a half (like against Washington) trying to adjust to Georgia's speed and power. Will they slow them down in the second half? I believe so. Georgia will defintely try to pound the ball with the run game and keep the UH offense off of the field. Knowshown Moreno will be difficult to stop. He has more speed than Ian Johnson,or any other back that Hawaii has faced all season and the line can be overpowering. However, I don't think they will get too many yards up the middle. Most of it will be to the edges, where a healthy Blaze Soares and Elimimian will have to cut him off. He can get to the corners quickly, so expect to see Hawaii's defense commit additional defenders to help out.
Can Georgia capitalize if Hawaii commits 8 or even 9 defenders to stop the run?
Defintely questionable. QB Stafford will have to try to capitalize with play action passes deep if Hawaii commits 8 men in the box and plays press coverage on the WR. Is he capable of doing it, I am not really sure, and although he has thrown it better later in the season, I am still not convinced. He is very inconsistent and completes only 55% of his passes, and has a 2 to 1 td to int ratio (low for a qb). He also tends to hold onto the ball waiting for his receivers to break open. So the answer is no I don't think they will.
Can Hawaii keep up with the speed of a SEC defense?
The answer is yes, they have done it against Alabama in 2006, and against other big schools. They didn't win those games last year, but they can defintely hold their own. It may take a quarter or two to get fully adjusted, but they can defintely keep up with them.
Can Georgia stop the Hawaii offense?
Geogia's 2 biggest wins this year have been against Auburn and Florida. Both offenses that primarily run the football. The Georgia defense is fast to the line of scrimage and can get stops behind the line. They will probably end the game with 6-8 sacks. However, Georgia faced 3 spread offense pass dominated teams in South Carolina, Tennessee, and Troy (from the SunBelt conference). Kentucky is not in this discussion because they primarily run a 2 wide,1 TE, base offense. Anyway, here were the results:
S. Carolina - loss - 16-12
Tennessee - loss - 35-14
Troy - win - 44-34
The Troy game is interesting to take a look at because they pass the ball ALOT. They were in this game for about 3 quarters until a couple of late mistakes. They are no where near Hawaii in passing the ball, but they do it quite a bit and was able to score points on UGA. This was also during Georgia's dominating win streak, and they were giving up big points to TROY!!!! From the Sunbelt Conference (albiet the champs) which is much weaker than the top tier of the WAC. The Georgia safeties are built to stop the run, or play zone, not to line up and cover slotbacks. Georgia is a very physical team, they go about 6 deep in the secondary but they will not be able to keep Hawaii from scoring points in bunches. There will be plenty of big plays for Hawaii's slot receivers in this game. I expect to see about 10 catches apiece for the 2 dreadheads inside.
Georgia will defintely try to blitz, and blitz hard to get to Brennen and make him uncomfortable in the pocket. This seems like the best strategy over the past 2 years against Hawaii. They will defintely get to him a few times (UGA leads the SEC w/ 22 sacks), but the times they don't, expect to see a lot of 7-12 yard completions from Bess and RGM.
It will come down to turnovers. When Georgia gets to Brennan for sacks, will he hold on to the ball or fumble it? I see maybe 1 or 2 turnovers by the Hawaii offense (1 from a sack & fumble, another from an int from a hurried pass), and Georgia getting short fields for easy scores. However, the VERY LARGE Georgia defensive line will not be able to continually send pressure every down. They are used to plugging up run lanes and waiting for running back to get to them. It is very different to contnually try to run up field to rush a quarterback EVERY down. Expect UH to score more points in the 2nd and 4th quarters of this game.
My 2 BOLD predictions for this game:
Drum roll please....
1) Hawaii will win the Sugar Bowl against Georgia! 42-34
2) LSU will beat Ohio St, meaning every other team in the country will have at least 2 losses. Hawaii will be crowned the AP writers co-National Champs (so that they can stick it to the BCS boys).
Thanks,
marty

Marty,
Thanks a lot for that extremely well thoughtout analysis. You obviously know your football. It was so objective, I cann't tell if you are a UGA or UH fan, and that is intended to be a compliment in the highest sense of the word. I/we UH fans really appreciate high quality comments like yours instead of the all too common trash talk. I hope that you continue to contribute to this website so all UH fans can benefit from your insight and experience. Much aloha and I wish you the best over this holiday season.

One additional point to make in UGA's favor:
Nobody knows how UH will respond on the road. History says not well, and this season all games were close (except for UNLV). Difference is that UH will travel 1 week before the game unlike the regular season. Hopefully there are no jet-lag ill effects from the travel and they are 100% ready to go.
Two additional points that many are overlooking in this game that favor UH:
1) Teams that whine about the BCS game they are in, usually because they feel they got shafted out of a chance at the championship game, is 0-7. Happened Michigan against UCS in the Rose Bowl, and to UGA 2 years ago in this same SugarBowl against West Virginia.
2) UGA Coaching - HC Mark Richt, DC Martinez, OC Bobo of UGA have a total of 0 years coaching in the NFL.
UH Coaching - HC June Jones (12 years), McMackin (5 years) in the NFL.
Don't underestimate this point. Giving NFL coaches 1 month to game plan is huge! I think no one brings this up because UGA is just more physical and fast, plays in teh SEC, and Richt has had success over his 7 seasons as a head coach, but I think game planning will play a big role in the outcome of this game.
thanks,
marty

Marty,
I think your last point about the NFL experience is the best yet. I agree that is a huge advantage for UH as it determines the quality of the entire game plan for both offense and defense. I think that alone will be a determining factor in the outcome.
