Heisman, June to UCLA?, Tickets, Bess, Ikaika

Dave Reardon followed Colt Brennan and the rest of the Heisman candidates as they toured New York yesterday.
"I'm really excited to be a part of it," Brennan said, after completing a double-decker bus tour of the city and before a pizza party that would cap the evening's activities. "There's always a possibility. But considering the fact that I didn't get invited to the Johnny Unitas or the Maxwell or the Camp (award shows), watching the way the awards have gone the past week, I'm just grateful to be here. I'm not too optimistic about me winning anything tomorrow."
Stephen Tsai has some details about the fan frenzy surrounding Colt.
Several autograph seekers greeted Brennan at the Newark International Airport luggage area.

Later, fans swarmed the stretch limousine carrying Brennan when it pulled into the driveway of the Midtown Manhattan hotel. Security was summoned to help Brennan exit the limo.

"It's been crazy," said UH sports media relations director Derek Inouchi, who is on Brennan's 10-person guest list to attend today's Heisman Award show at the Nokia Theatre in Times Square.
Ferd Lewis writes about the fellowship between Colt and some former UH QBs.
"Everybody who played, whether they were a backup defensive lineman or special teams player, feels a part of this," Rolovich said. "But as a quarterback, you feel like you have a foot on that stage (today) with Colt."
Check out Dave's and Stephen's blogs for any updates leading up to the Heisman ceremony later today.

Okay, this is not what you want to hear.
Meanwhile, Hawaii coach June Jones let UCLA know he is interested in the vacant head coaching position, and he is a candidate of interest for Bruins athletic director Dan Guerrero, sources said.
However...
But a big question for UCLA could be Jones' true interest in the job. He is paid $800,000 at Hawaii, must deal with downtrodden practice and coaching facilities, and has a recruiting budget of $50,000. There could be concern Jones would use UCLA to get a better deal at Hawaii.
There's no way UH would let June go without a fight. Of course, I would not be surprised if this one was fumbled too. But June loves Hawaii too much...

======

Rosemarie Bernardo writes about the tickets UH are keeping in-house.
The University of Hawaii reserved a little more than twice the number of Allstate Sugar Bowl tickets for its team and university use than the University of Georgia.

UH set aside 3,000 tickets compared with Georgia's 1,370 tickets.

A breakdown of who will get the tickets UH slated for the team and university use was not available yesterday. "We're still working on that. We'll be able to confirm those numbers soon," said associate athletic director Carl Clapp yesterday.

The University of Georgia readily disclosed to whom its tickets are going.
That'll be an interesting list. And if they're holding so many tickets, it's another reason to ask why did they give so many back?

Congratulations to Davone Bess, who was named a Walter Camp 2nd team All-American.

And finally, here's a Q&A with Ikaika Alama-Francis, from the Detroit Free Press.

    Tom-

This ticket thing gets deeper and deeper into a morass of mismanagement. How can a 60-million athletic department like Georgia only need 1300 tix, when ours needs 2.5X that??? BTW, does the UH 3K include the band? Is the band even going???

Oh and one more thing on this list of additional season ticket holders, which in the article is stated at 300+ for an estimated 1500 tickets. The truth of this is that this list was CLOSED on Tuesday!!! In other words, they stopped taking names, so while it is optimistic that they might, MIGHT meet the needs of those on the list, the athletic department still has no actual way of knowing who in addition to that 1500 would really want tickets, and how to meet that need. In other words, as of Wed, they still have not served the needs of the demand. When you cut off taking names, as the athletic department did, you drive people elsewhere (like me) who know not to waste time trying to get on a list that is capped and this masks the true depth/impact of the screw-up (in the spirit of the holidays its akin to 'we closed the door because the inn was full and said we'd done our job intstead of keeping the door open and inviting everyone in -' I think the only true evaluation will be when the game is actually played and the UH officials see all the white and green in the stands and know what really happened and how many were not served-

yes, the band is going. but they don't take up that much. this is what a true college football game and environment should be like. cheerleaders, bands, fans of both sides going crazy for their team.

not sure where the rest of the 3000 are going to, but we should throw this fiasco back at the sugar bowl and our athletic department that had no faith in us, their fans.

How much money is enough money for June Jones? He's already living, last I heard, in a paid house, not to mention the school gave him a car for him to use. I think the hype of all this (Sugar Bowl) and seeing other coach's pay has gotten to his head. I won't be surprised if what he said to UCLA comes back and haunts the warriors in New Orleans. What a way for June to set a mark leading up to the Sugar Bowl.

..and oh yeh, he gets paid more than Coach Paterno.

He get paid more than coach Petrino in the NFL @ the Atlanta Falcons? Somehow i find that hard to believe..

i think the first anonymous is basing the comparison on paterno's base salary, versus june's total salary. paterno's base salary is about $500K, while his total is a lot more than that. june's base salary is $400k while his total (paid by boosters, etc) is $800k.

    check out this article.

that being said, i think june deserves to pursue as much as he can get in the market. for a division I coach, he's relatively low paid, especially for all he's done for the football program and the school.

kawiks, i'm sure you're right. there must be way more people that want tickets than is on the waiting list, which doesn't include non season ticket holders.

JJ really doesn't want to leave IMO. I strongly feel he is putting his feet down to demand more for the schools AD and the kids.

Remember that in his book he turned down a 2.5 million a year coaching job to follow his heart.

JJ is not about money, but it comes down to what he can do for the kids in improving the facilities and better pay for his coaching staff, and they deserve a decent pay raise too.

There is rumors that H Frazier is getting a bonus over 100k for the Teams success, and not his coaching staff....now IMO wouldn't you agree that JJ is tired of all this politics?

JJ, his coaching staff and the kids deserve more with the money they are getting from the BCS.

IMO, it is part of JJ plan....

    GO WARRIORS!

    GO JJ!
