What's That Saying About "No Such Thing As Bad Publicity?"

The AP has picked up on the Ian Sample story.
HONOLULU (AP) — University of Hawaii athletic officials on Monday said they will look into allegations raised by a former receiver, including the claim that school officials and players manipulated NCAA-mandated drug tests.

Ian Sample, who recently published a book chronicling the 2006 season entitled, Once A Warrior, released unpublished material on his blog about excessive drinking, widespread use of marijuana, sex with groupies and rigged drug tests.

Sample, who now plays professional football in Japan, wrote that he's "convinced the 'random' tests are not random at all."
Earlier today, Dave Reardon had this response from June Jones.
One chapter on the Internet implied that UH rigged drug testing so that key players who used marijuana or steroids were not tested.

"Absolutely a lie," Jones said, in making his first extensive public comments on the book. "It's a farce to assume we hand pick them. We don't have anything to do with it."

Jones said the NCAA sends the school a list of names of players to be drug tested.
"It's unfortunate," Jones said. "These are the greatest kids in the world. It's a shame someone would throw them under the bus. In this day, with the Internet, anyone can say what they want.

"It's so dishonorable. Some of those things do happen, but to suggest it's condoned. ..."
Guess we'll see how this plays out. Just in time for the start of the season!

hope he realized what he just did... made himself almost even par with HF... Public Enemy #1...

good to see that the story has JJ's comments on there. hmmm, wonder if JJ tried to help him out with good words to potential teams for him to get picked up by a pro team. I hope he didn't. Never bite the hand that fed you and took care of you. People in Hawaii NEVER forget.

have fun in Japan. we don't want you back. hope you're good over there, as your writing career is over. there's a reason why your editor EDITED OUT that stuff. did you even think what would happen??? thats why there's always a second check. to get someone else's opinion. and get your facts straight.

Maybe he sucked and failed in Math. thats why he was an English major (nothing against you other good English majors). Someone should teach him randomness.... First off, the tests aren't even done by UH or ANY university. Bobby Curran did some research this weekend, and ALL NCAA TEAMS are tested by a NCAA hired organization. They do the RANDOM picking of players. If it happened to Randomly pick player #1 every time and Player #2 and 3 never, then thats just it, its RANDOM!!!!! You can't explain it. Its just CHANCE! Maybe he got picked too many times... Hmmm... Get your facts straight. After hearing that this morning, I agree with Bobby Curran. His integrity is severely questionable now. I don't believe anything he says.

Also, here's a rant I wrote in the SportsHawaii forum that I want to share here:

he was a walk on that was given a chance to shine. how many yards and how many TDs did he have? he's lucky he suited up.

if he's not happy with that, he should've just sat in the stands and watched the real players play. was he given a scholarship later in his playing career? if so, it was football that paid partially for his degree. he's throwing himself under a bus by all his comments too. he should've realized (like his editor did) what sort of ramifications his accusations on his myspace page would bring. did he think of others by doing this? looks unlikely. hopefully espn doesn't pick up on this and blow it up. thats the last thing we need this season. flip it from positive to negative.

his book title should've read, LUCKY TO BE A WARRIOR.

you should have the pride to say, ALWAYS A WARRIOR. but no one will ever consider him that way again.
