Thursday Practice, Dual Threat, Blumberg

Stephen Tsai and Jason Kaneshiro have Thursday practice notes.

Kaneshiro has an article highlighting the dual threat that is Bryant Moniz.
Although Moniz's primary duty remains executing the Warriors' throw-first philosophy, his mobility provides another dimension to the offense.

"That's something I hope to add to the team and hopefully strengthen in the offseason because I think I can get a lot better running-wise and become a real dual threat," Moniz said. "Whatever it takes to help the team."
Stephen Tsai writes about the injuries and staph infections, and profiles kicker Brian Blumberg.
"Accuracy and speed," Blumberg said, have been his focus since suffering an injury to his kicking knee in 2007.

As a freshman at El Camino that year, a long snap sailed over his head on a punt attempt. After retrieving the ball, Blumberg was struck on his right knee by a defender, causing a tear to the anterior cruciate ligament.

Blumberg was able to resume kicking seven months later. But by the then, he was a different kicker.

"I lost power," he said. "I used to be a power kicker like Scott. I had to flip. Surgery totally spun my game around. I loved kickoffs before. Now I'm a (field-goal) specialist."

I have been following the blog:

    http://warriorbeat.honadvblogs.com/2009/11/09/wright-jackson-wins-wac-award/#comments

I agree with everyone on here. This is a big mistake being made by the special teams coach Tormey. Someone said on the above blog that "instead of wasting time doing these asinine 'kick offs' maybe Tormey should focus on the 1st string kicker and help him to improve his timing"???? Does anyone agree with this???

Tormey and 2nd string kicker Blumberg both admitted the Enos has the better leg. Sure he can speed it up a bit, but who helps him achieve this? They could have worked with Enos all week to improve his timing instead of wasting his time.

Just goes to show the lack of common scene and knowledge Tormey has of coaching the special teams kicker and punter.

What are Tormey's qualifications to coach kickers and punters? Also why has he not helped Enos improve his timing?

Well said. He has the stronger leg so work with him! Why waste all this time?

As for the post above….You hit the nail right on the head. Why misuse an entire weeks worth of time? I don’t know what Tormey’s coaching qualifications are for this, sorry I can’t help. Not many people seem to know either. Maybe that is the answer to your question.!

Seems to be a lot of chatter in relation to the kicking program. Seems like they do much better when it gets booted right down the field. It gives them more time to make tackles. Why have they required both punter and kicker to perform so many directional kicks this year? It seems as if these are hard to keep in bounds? If you were on the receiving team wouldn’t you want to try to let it bounce out? Does anyone know why they have made them perform this kicking strategy so much this year if it is not working? Why not let them boot it straight down the field?

AS I stated in my first post Reggie, read the comments that were posted on Stephan Tsai's Blog.

I know you mentioned the directional kicking also. This is something not many kickers do as often as UH. Yet are really just bad calls made my coaches that are worried about there lack of Defense.

I think the trouble really lies in the Field Goal attempts. The extra points seem to be a breeze, but work needs to be done on improving the timing. You are right...how do you improve with a coach that has been fired as the head coach of Idaho, Nevada and the linebacker coach for Washington? His reputation is not much to boast about. A blogger that went by "pigskinwarrior" asked a good question, "would Tormey have been hired if he didn't have ties with coach Mac?

better get back to work! Have a great day UH fans! Lets kick some butt on Saturday!!!

No one cares! Why is this such a big deal? Tormey cant coach and Enos can kick like a rocket ship. Get him a good coach and call it a day.

The answer is accuracy and winning. Blumberg is more accurate and is still regaining his leg strength from his recovering from ACL surgery. He won at least 2-4 games for his JC that was ranked in the top 4 JC's in the Country last season. Blumberg is money and has "ice" running in his veins. Give Blumberg a chance!!!!!

    "Football Fanatic" says:

A kicking contest between kickers instead of working with their individual skills and/or weaknesses? Seriously? If I were in charge of these coaches, I'd be asking some serious questions about this coaching plan. Could be why Tormey hasn't been able to hold a coaching position for long. "Here's your sign..."

    I agree with that....footballfanatic.

Blumberg can kick but not well enough. He even admitted it in an interview yesterday that Enos has the better leg. Tormey also stated the same thing. Blumberg had his chance. He cant kick more than 40yards and he said it himself.

Whats up with Alex D.??? Is he going to kick off or just stick with punting? Or are they going to make him punt off also????

    "footballfanatic",
If you had read the full article, Blumberg says he is much stronger now and can go to 50 yards and from 40 he doesn't miss. They were about equal out of Fall Camp and the Coach was interviewed at that time stating he would rotate the kickers at Home Games for which he has not. Blumberg won't let you down, have an open mind if you want to win. Go Warriors!!!!!
