WAC Schedule, DBs, Pro Day, Mouton

Stephen Tsai gets some reaction to the just-released WAC schedule.
UH yesterday announced a 2009 schedule in which it will play three road games in a row and a stretch of five of seven away games in September and October.

There also will be a 36-day gap between home games Sept. 4 against Central Arkansas and Oct. 10 against Fresno State.

"That's crazy," defensive tackle Rocky Savaiigaea said. "I've never seen anything like that. But it's football. You have to play no matter what."

UH head coach Greg McMackin said: "You gotta play what you gotta play. It'll all work out."
Jason Kaneshiro takes a look at the schedule.

Brian McInnis talks to defensive backs Lametrius Davis and Melvin Hopkins about life in Division I.
As Hawaii fans watched Monday's kickoff to spring training, they caught their first glimpse of junior college transfers Lametrius Davis and Melvin Hopkins among the new-look Warriors. In turn, it was the first take of the UH faithful -- gathered about 100 strong at the UH grass practice field -- for the two defensive backs.

"I was looking around, looking at everybody like, 'Dang, this is how it is, how it looks at the next level,' " said Davis, a 6-foot, 190-pound junior from Butte College (Calif.) "Oh no, we never had that (for a JC practice)." He chuckled.

Hopkins was equally stunned.

"Everything's just different. It's like, I'd never had so many people watch a practice like that," said Hopkins (5-9, 165) of Navarro College (Texas). "It makes it feel like a game. I can get used to that, but I've never been a part of this. It's crazy."
Spring practice resumes today. Here's a compilation of links you can use to follow whatever live coverage there may be.

Tsai previews tomorrow's Pro Day in Carson, CA. One of the Pro Day participants, Ryan Mouton, appears to moving up NFL draft boards.
Mouton is not a well known prospect by the media, but NFL personnel men have started to move him up draft boards this spring. He is an athletic cornerback with the foot quickness and explosiveness to close on passes in a flash, and he has the ball skills to break up passes. He also is a competitive player who flies upfield to deliver violent tackles. He should be a nickel cornerback as a rookie and a starter in time.
