Quad Preview, Fonoti, Lafaele, Owens, Etc.
The New York Times Quad blog has college football countdown, and ranks UH at #65 this year, which is about the average of what other magazine and publications are saying, the bastards. Here's an excerpt from their extensive preview:
Stephen Tsai profiles defensive end John Fonoti.
Ferd Lewis writes about the potential heat and humidity at the UH-Florida game on August 30th. As Jim Donovan puts it:
Chad Owens has been named to the AFL's All-Rookie team despite a late start and an early end to his season. Get well, Mighty Mouse!
Here's an interesting profile of former UH and current SMU coach Jeff Reinebold, from PonyFans.com.

It is likely no coincidence that “Coach Mack” has been involved in the two greatest seasons in Hawaii’s history (the nine-game turnaround in 1999, and last fall’s run). Though he has a monumental task ahead of him in replacing Jones, Hawaii seems to have chosen the right man for the job. Most importantly, players, fans and U.H. supporters have almost universally lauded the hiring, an integral step in the program moving forward after a difficult divorce from his predecessor. The article also includes a review of key losses, players to watch, breakdowns, predictions, etc.
Stephen Tsai profiles defensive end John Fonoti.
This offseason, middle linebacker Brashton Satele and Fonoti, who is listed as the No. 1 defensive right end, are workout partners. Their day begins with a 5 a.m. wake-up call.Tsai has more offseason workout photos on his blog, writes that Michael Lafaele recently had a tryout with the Buffalo Bills, and shows some Warriors on their mopeds. Noooooo. Mopeds bad!
"I used to have to call him," Satele said. "Now, the majority of the time he's waking up on his own. Now he's calling me. He's way more committed this year. He's taking on a leadership role."
Ferd Lewis writes about the potential heat and humidity at the UH-Florida game on August 30th. As Jim Donovan puts it:
"My guess is it will be about 92 to 97 degrees — and about 106 percent humidity. We may need to issue snorkels."Lewis also writes about the financial disparity between the two programs.
Chad Owens has been named to the AFL's All-Rookie team despite a late start and an early end to his season. Get well, Mighty Mouse!
Here's an interesting profile of former UH and current SMU coach Jeff Reinebold, from PonyFans.com.
“June told us at the Sugar Bowl that it (the move to Dallas) might happen,” Reinebold said. “Then, after we got home, he called at 4 a.m. (Hawaii time) to tell me about his decision. Initially, he told me he wanted me to stay there in Hawaii, because there were a lot of projects we had started as a staff there. But after a lot of soul-searching and talking with my wife, we knew it was the right thing for me to come to SMU with him. Besides, our daughter, Megan, is a student at Hawaii, and this gives us the opportunity to get her to SMU.”And finally, CFN's Pete Fiutak has 2009 NFL Draft Rankings. He has Dan Kelly as the #4 placekicker, John Estes as the #16 offensive guard, and Solomon Elimimian as the #21 outside linebacker.

I'm glad its coming out that the coaches and players knew about SMU move was a strong possibility before JJ went to the Sugar Bowl. All I want is the truth to be told. Those in the know understand the move is a good one for JJ, and it makes lots of sense. We still got to give JJ props for trying to make UH better by him leaving. Also, I saw JJ yesterday with the mediator and the da man Clyde Matsui.

Don't know what to think about this JJ thing. I understand that the game is over and all that, but why did JJ even have to mention anything to the coaches at the Sugar Bowl that may or may not have gotten to the players.
What good could it possibly have done by mentioning that he may leave. I can see only bad things happening by spreading such a rumor.
Now it makes so much sense that the coaching did not seem right with little or no adjustments during the game. I feel the players still played hard but we don't yet know what they knew about JJ leaving at game time--or how they felt during the game.
I wouldn't think JJ or JR wanted this story to come out. Sometimes people talk too much without thinking. I just think as time passes, more truths will come out inadvertently.
If that game is an indication of how a top SEC team plays, then UH better be more than just prepared for Florida--and hopefully no rumors going around at that time.
I now also wonder about JJ's comments at that time about Tebow--did he know he could say anything and not have to worry about playing against Tebow?

Not sure what happened but Timmy Chang is not on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats roster but is on the Injured List. So that means he will not play at all tomorrow--too bad.

Tombo, did the comment area change recently to automatically limit the length of links to the width of the column? Looks good, so now I don't have to always chop the link length.

i don't think the comment area has changed, unless blogger changed it on their end. you can also use the "a href" tags. for example:
<a href="URL">text text text</a>
which will turn out like this:
text text text
replace "URL" with whatever page you want it to link to.

Gotta give props to FSU beating UGA in the college world series. I know that is baseball, and this is football. But the sediment is the same. The WAC can keep up the big boys of the SEC as long as the WAC believes they can win and give it 100%. I heard from the players that the JJ rumor hurt the team and distracted the players. Some were trying to figure out their future at UH or somewhere else. I really think if the UH players and coaches were not distracted the Sugar Bowl would have been a shootout. Maybe I'm sugar coating the Sugar Bowl, but after the first series where CB was hit on every play, my friend and I were commenting on a rolling pocket, using an O-line as running back, more 2 second timing plays, option to get around the end, and flea flicker.

Tombo,
I got no inside info on the mediation. All I know is general stuff. Both JJ and UH have decent arguments, although I think UH would win. I just want to see JJ pay, and then get it all back from Fraizer. The claim against Fraizer is a bit weak.

thanks for the insights, kb. things are making more sense in the way they played out... anyway, i'm just glad we got mack, the lee brothers and the coaches we got after jj left. they're coaches with tons of experience getting their chance to shine, so i can sense the enthusiasm and knowledge they're bringing to this season. this team will be a lot better than the national press is giving them credit for.
and yeah, congrats to fresno for beating georgia.

Tombo, I don't understand a word you said about href or URL. I am computer illiterate. Maybe it could be my change to firefox 3 or something like you said about blogger might have made a change. All I know is that before I had to chop up long links and now the long links are automatically wrapped so no need to chop. Anyway, I will probably continue to do my post without the href and whatever else. Does that mean that is what you have to do each time you want to present the link?
KB, thank you for info on the players knowing about the rumor. I also could not understand how the game was being played.

Hi Tombo, not sure why but I have never been able to use the link to the Florida blog site Orange and Blue Hue until I found this other site that links to that and blogs from newspapers in Florida (including the Orange and Blue Hue that you wanted). When you have the time, you might want to check out this link:

As always, I trust your decision whatever you choose.

Tombo,
I agree about the team. I have been flat out impressed with Mac, Lees, and the rest of the staff at UH. They do right from "A" through "Z" in my book. I really think we have something special. Having a great coach makes all the difference in the world to a college athlete. Excitement and enthusiasm is infectious. It all starts with the coaches, and then seniors setting the bar by example. I think Mack will take UH to the next level. I also like how we are rewarding the qualified former athletes with positions on the staff as coaches. As in life, the little things make all the difference. Mack and staff are doing the little things.
By the way, I like that JJ and Mack are recruiting together in Samoa. I think it benefits both teams. Hawaii will always look more attractive than SMU because we are a part of Polynesia, we have a large Samoan community, and we understand and respect the Samoan customs. (i.e. nobody bothers the A'awa ceremony at Kapiolani park even if they stay beefing)
